229595 2004-04-16 02:46:00 I am attempting to exterminate all 3.5" floppy disk drives in all my computers, but am having a problem with doing this on my two windowsXP pro machines.

I have physically removed the drive, and removed all references to it from the BIOS, but when windows starts to load, the PC simply resets... infinite loop...

Is there any way I can tell windows the drive no longer exists, and not to look for it?

Cheers,
Craig.

229596 2004-04-16 03:36:00 Try putting the drive back in. Starting Windows and remove all mention of it using Device Manager, closing Windows then remove the drive again. mikebartnz (21)
229597 2004-04-16 05:10:00 Thanks, Mike, I am about to try that this weekend, as that was my next idea, but I thougth I would see if there might be another thing I had overlooked before I do.

Cheers
Craig.

229598 2004-04-16 14:22:00 mate, you have to reset boot start piority options in the BIOS. coz i can c yer compi is tryin to boot frm a floppy whr it doesnt exist at all. so u might s well change booting options in the BIOS and change it to hard-drive or CD-ROM...:) sharvil_nz (5529)
229599 2004-04-17 04:09:00 Why would anyone want to get rid of a floppy drive? I can think of at least a dozen floppies I use regularly. Or are you planning to transfer minor programs on to CD's?

229600 2004-04-17 09:08:00 I haven't used floppies for years, wouldn't have bothered with them as far back as 98,except win98 refused to install if it didn't detect a floppy. metla (154)

229602 2004-04-17 23:03:00 The only use I know of for a floppy these days is to flash some Bios. mikebartnz (21)
229603 2004-04-17 23:42:00 flash cards are taking over. and i can see why. even a dinky 64mb one os better than 64 floppies Megaman (344)
229604 2004-04-20 01:16:00 Thanks to those that actually posted a useful reply .

I really don't like the way just about every topic in this forum turns into a discussion of the same peoples opinions about a minor piece of the question .

I don't particularly want to do this, but:

Nowhere in my post did I ask for comments or questions as to what I might use a floppy disk for, or what I could replace it with . I wanted help with how I might remove it .

Also, it would be nice if people who are going to answer would read the question . I clearly stated that I had removed all references to the 3 . 5" drive in the bios, this includes the boot devices list .

As to the solution, removing the floppy controller, and drive from the device manager seems to have solved the original problem, like Mike suggested in the first reply . All of the rest of the responses were redundant .

Thanks again to those helpful few . . .
Craig .
