| 229968 | 2004-04-17 01:22:00 | Hi, I've just got a few more PC games, (Far Cry, Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, Unreal Tournament 2004). I have a GForce 4 MX440, 64Mb and need to upgrade to 128Mb or 256Mb to run Far Cry well. Does anybody have any recommendations for a new card. I was going to install it my self because I'm not paying $100 per hour for the local computer shop to install it, (afraid I might stuff the computer up though). |

If your on a tight budget and the g4mx is in your sites....then stop, drop and roll.. lmao. seriously, find a second hand g4ti rather then a new g4mx, even in their day they weren't a good buy, now they are positively a negative |

| 229972 | 2004-04-17 03:39:00 | >positively a negative HAHAHA!!!! good one... If you got the cash, overshoot the fx5200's and grab a 5600 or 5700. Aim for 128 bit memory pipes (?) and try to get the ultra or xt cards. 256MB aren't much more than 128MB so why not aim for that too. If you got the cash at least. And inserting the AGP card is easy... just undo the clip at the end of the slot and then place the card into the slot and push until you feel it slide in. Clip the clip and youre done... Depends how much of a newbie you are I guess.... I gotta get a new card to replace my mx440 soon too..... |

| 229973 | 2004-04-17 04:09:00 | Hey, i will have your mx440 then :-) 128mb cards are faster than 256mb, because the 256mb cards use cheaper ram or something. Do not get a 5200, or even a 5200 Ultra, or 5600 / Ultra. The best bet is a 5700 / Ultra, or if you have a spare $1000 floating around, wait for that new 6800 Ultra ;-) I am not sure if any game really needs 256mb video ram, so I don't know if getting a 128mb is worth the extra speed. Unsure on all that. Radeon supposedly still has the best image quality as well. |

| 229974 | 2004-04-17 08:58:00 | Can I make a little clarification? Of course I can. The xt line was mentioned, these are slower then the non-xt cards (in the nvidia range). As to the issue of the video ram, in order to keep prices closer the 256mb cards usually have slower ram, however this is normally only during the first release and on the cheaper cards. As production hits full capacity and the production price decreases many are released with better spec ram. Plus you get the manufactures trying to out do each other by releasing cards with better specs then the base design. This doesnt apply if your shopping in the lowest price range for any model. The benefit of 256mb of ram is in being able to run AA and AF, both use up more ram and when combined can ask more then what a 128mb card is capable of, which may or may not be a concern as using them slows down the framerate causing less need of the ram. Its give and take, but you can load up the effects and have a game refuse to run due to not enough video ram. |

| 229975 | 2004-04-17 13:17:00 | Hi, Yeah, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Rainbow Six 3 run pretty well, even on high settings. In some of the bigger, more detailed levels in UT2004 it does have quite a bit of trouble, (on high settings). Over all it's a great card if you don't have a big budget. But as I've found out, a game like Far Cry needs a better card. |

| 229976 | 2004-04-17 13:21:00 | Hi, I live in Timaru and use Computer Shop Timaru, (CST). They took 1 hour to install the sound card I recently brought and charged me $100 and I was Standing there in the shop expecting it to be $60 at the max. Bit of a rip off!! |

WOW thats a lot of $$ i would say $60 per hour would be about right, as for installing a sound card.... any trained monkey can do it in 15 minutes....... one hour to install a sound card is SLOW...... i would look at going to another shop. last shop i worked in we would install cards we sold as a free service. |
