230363 2004-04-18 13:14:00 How do I install stuff on Xandros? I have taken the sh files, copied the code into the console and... nothing... as far as I can see. I did it with OpenDC Hub, Nvidia drivers, and firefox but I see no confirmation, no shortcuts.

Maybee I'm too much of a n00b but it seems like Xandros has the same old problems with installing **** as all the other linux distro's. I don't want to have to spend 3 days recompiling the kernel just to install my GFX drivers.

I ain't no MS zealot as any PF1er would know - but what the hell is up with installations on linux? Hasn't anyone made an automated installer (binary?) for linux?

Cheers.

230364 2004-04-18 13:31:00 .sh files are usually scripts.

If you navigate to the folder they are in and (as root) type: ./script_name_3.2.sh

Or something to that effect it should all start happening.

230365 2004-04-18 19:00:00 I am a newbie with Xandros as well. I found (so far) the best way to install anything is to use Xandros Networks.

From this I have installed Evolution (linux version of Outlook) and many other apps that Xandros has created installers for. Only a few times have I had to install from console (limewire being one and some hardware stuff as well)

From my meagre knowledge I open XN. Type in the search engine an app that I want. Locate and install. Be aware that some of the apps (like Evolution) you need to register first but it is free.

Also some of the other apps or hardware conflicts I have gone here (http://forums.xandros.com/) for advice. I think some Xandros staff are moderators so they know there stuff.

230366 2004-04-18 23:18:00 Installing Firefox is easy!

If its not on the Xandros networks, then do the following:
Grab this file here:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.8/firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

Next, there's two ways of doing this:
1. Setting it up for current user only
2. Setting it up for system-wide use

Lets do #1 first:
Open up your home directory in a file-manager (I dunno what Xandros call it but its some hacked up incarnation of konqueror....).
Untar the firefox.tar.gz file your just downloaded (It should open in ark or file-roller or something...)
Change into the folder you just un-tar'ed it to.
Click on the file called "firefox"

Firefox should now run. You can make an icon pointing to /home/username/firefox/firefox
And it'll work peachy.

But... What if you want all users to be able to access it??

Open up a konsole and type the following:
su -
[enter root password]
cp /home/username/firefox_filename_here.tar.gz /usr/local
cd /usr/local
tar xvzf firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz (Dont forget you can type "tar xvzf firefox" then hit tab and it will complete the file-name for you)
cd /usr/bin
ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox

You can now run firefox by making an icon to run "firefox", or run it from the command line.

Firefox should be in the Xandros Networks though...??

230367 2004-04-19 01:49:00 w00t!!!! I did it! Thanks a heap chill!

I installed it from the console just like you said then made a shortcut on the desktop!

I'm using it now to write this!

Can I use the same procedure to install other .tar.gz things, like xfce? And my nvidia drivers?

230368 2004-04-19 01:55:00 Xfce would be a pretty major change to the system, and Im not sure how well Xandros would take to you installing it (Be it from source code or a deb package) because of Xandros' tight KDE integration... nVidia drivers however are a simple package in the Xandros Networks IIRC, and they're easy as to setup Im told.

If you want Xfce, then try Vector Linux... ;-)

230369 2004-04-19 04:57:00 If you find the firefox fonts a bit ugly, grab the xft version instead:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.8/firefox-0.8-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz

230370 2004-04-19 05:08:00 Pity that Xandros does not support Linstall. Makes life for Linux newbees like me so much better. One click, answer a few questions and it's done. Just like a Windozs install..

If all Linux apps were done this way Linux may get accepted better than being known as a pig to do things with unless your the geek type..

230371 2004-04-19 06:06:00 You cant go past Kynaptic. Ark Linux now uses this as its default Package Manager and its brilliant....

Kynaptic and/ Portage ;-)

In theory the objective of RPM's is a binary installer but each distro, in some cases, has added it own package manager on top of that.

It can only get better. Windows has taken a while to "mature".
