230268 2004-04-18 01:12:00 Is there anyone out there wanting to learn Delphi5, following along with the series of step-by-step articles by Geoff Palmer.

I've been trying to work my way thru them, with not a lot of luck....it would be great to have someone to bounce things offf....(preferably not literally!!!!!)

I'm new to programming so theres alot of stuff that may seem basic to you all, but is driving me around the bend. i.e. "Finally, with the button selected, hit the Delete key. That’s how to get rid of controls..." well it doesn't on my keyboard.....crikey that was in the first lesson and I still havent figured that particular one out yet...

Anyways if anyone can help out, would be great!!

cheers dibbly

230269 2004-04-18 02:52:00 I'm not sure if Geoff covered the fact that before you start learning a language, it is appropriate for you to first learn some basic programming principles and design.

This should include things like flowcharts (old), structure diagrams, structured english/pseudocode, internal documentation/comments, external documentation/readme's

Once you've got those down pat, you should be in a better position and mentality to start learning a language because it will make learning a language much easier

Not necessarily. Certainly knowing how to design using methods like structured diagrams would help but only if one is designing and implementing a fully functional program. Its possible and quite acceptable for someone new to the subject to first learn the syntax of that particular language: what keywords there are, what one can do with these keywords, the limitations of these keywords, etc .... if this was not the case then teaching institutes like poly techs and universities would teach disign concepts first and not syntax.

230271 2004-04-18 04:12:00 Quote from Delphi Step by Step 1 (2nd para.), Tue 5 June 2001 by Geoff Palmer:

"Before we begin, I have to say I’ve made some assumptions about you, dear reader. I’ve assumed that you’re reasonably au fait with the Windows environment, that you’ve managed to follow the prompts and get Delphi installed, and that you’re a cognitive, conscious organism —.....What other attributes do you need? Curiosity, a willingness to try things out (and make mistakes) and a willingness to learn. If you’ve never programmed before, or never programmed Windows, you’re in the right place. ...If you’re already a Delphi whiz, welcome, your comments, suggestions and code snippets will be appreciated, but do bear in mind this is a series for beginners." my emphasis added here.

I assumed that never having programmed before that I was in the right place...yes, I am curious and yes, I am willing to learn and yes I am a beginner, but I've never let these facts ever stop me from doing anything I have set my heart on.

I'm looking for a buddy (experienced or not) who is not afraid of what others think about their abilities or lack thereof - the destination is unimportant its about all the fun (and heartache!!) of the journey itself.

Any positive feedback and comments appreciated

I'm learning Java so I can't help. But hey, go hard dude. I agree with you about the destination being unimportant. I wish you a happy journey :)

P.S When you get to the stage where you want to discuss different ways of performing a particular task (algorithms) it might be find to bounce a few ideas around. Just a thought.

Errr ... should read what I type before I post it. The above should read: " ... it might be fun ..."

230274 2004-04-18 06:37:00 I could be interested in doing a programming thing over e-mail . I'm a delphi beginner too, only I use 7, not 5 so things might be slightly different . I think I'm a bit ahead of you, as I have done some simple programming in delphi before (partly to make a GUI editor for the apache config file), but am still very much a beginner . Also, I don't have any PC World issue before October 2002, so I might not be too much help following the column until then .

230275 2004-04-18 10:41:00 hey Steve

any help I can get, I'll take!! Yeh you are a bit ahead of me but thats ok

as far as the articles are concerned I have all of those, so thats not a worry.

I have managed to run my program without any error messages popping up but its not working exactly as it Geoff says it should...if you're willing to take a look at the code for me you can contact me at donnabee7 at hotmail.com

thanks Steve
