I just got woosh yesterday, but iam not getting a stable signals. according to their manual they say that two lEDS on, on the modem tells us that the signal requirement for 256/kb/s is covered. but after sometime one leds goes off and the line kinda drops. has anyone had this problems before. i was thinking to get their booster but will the booster help it go up2 4-5 LEDS on and will that affect my speed
(Eg more LEDS more speed?)

230574 2004-04-20 21:00:00 I would strongly suggest you talk to Woosh and report back on this thread. Lot's of people are interested in how Woosh goes, myself included.

230575 2004-04-21 00:50:00 Have you tried in all rooms of the house? I'd get a booster antenna to get a good signal.

Do a search of the forum for woosh. You'll see me raving on how bad it is :P The latest thing out which I discovered last night, nzdsl.co.nz is running a mighty fine scam with their speed test site, and woosh endorse that site for users to check the speed of their connection. More to come on that shortly.

Are you still in your location off Dominion Road? I don't know where Woosh transmits from, but it would be a good bet that the Skytower is involved. Can you see it from your location?

P.S. Did you ever fix your UHF TV reception problem?

230577 2004-04-21 02:56:00 I have the new Woosh connection; I was previously on the Waverider plan (Fixed dish on the side of House, LOS to POP required)

As for a comparison:

Woosh

256Kb/s - Full Duplex
"Unlimited" data transfer .
$69ish ;-)
No Web space included .
Multiple emails supported . . .
Pretty darned good Customer Service response

Waverider
256Kb/s - Full duplex
Unlimited data transfer .
$130ish
Depending on ISP web space provided .
Email - ISP dependant
Perfect Customer service for Network issues
ISP - dependant for other issues (read: pretty crappy)

My opinion is that I had almost no hassles with the older Waverider plan, I was notified well in advance of Network downtime, Stable connection for quite literally Months at a time (had a home made router to my LAN, something coming down or going up all the time) I was never contacted in anyway regarding data transfer volume .

For the Woosh connection, there are a few fiddly antics to get things running .
1 . I need a booster . Extra $$$ up front .
2 . The signal when connecting needs to have a difference of say 8dB between Signal at least no matter how good your connection appears to be on the Modem, IE I have “full” reception out Mt . Wellington way, but I have issues with the interference nearly matching the signal, so while I fairly often get full connection speeds, I also often have the connection drop all together .
3 . As it stands, I am still trying to figure out how to set up the router for the connection, so that I can share it more simply on a LAN . Having to resort to ICS to get it going . Which is sad ;-(

So yeah, not as user friendly as it could be, & with the connection being as variable as a cellfone connection (which is what it is really) you have a Prima donna of a connection, VS . a Workhorse on Waverider .

I’m not disappointed as such, as the network will surely grow & connection reliability will improve . But I’ll keep an eye out for alternatives now…

Oh, as a PS . Yeah, latency is bad, don’t game on this connection, you wont like it .

PPS . I have also had my first “Hey did you know you were using a heck of a lot of bandwidth” call . I blandly replied “Yes, about 30 gigs so far I believe .

Terms & Conditions ( . woosh . com/UserInterface/Woosh/Static/Terms/Terms . aspx" target="_blank">www . woosh . com)

Notably section 7 . Charges:

Unless we have agreed different charges with you, the charges
are as set out on our website . We may change our charges from time to
time but will give you a minimum of one month’s notice before doing so .
If the plan you have selected is subject to reasonable usage and, in our
opinion, you use the Services unreasonably we may terminate the Services,
change your plan or begin charging you for usage . On metered
plans, you may not carry over unused entitlements to later months .

I am on “Woosh Everyday” Unlimited Subject to reasonable use .
Which when I check refers me to . woosh . com/UserInterface/Woosh/Static/Faq/Faq . aspx]the" target="_blank">www . woosh . com ( [url) FAQs[/url]

Woosh Everyday is designed for everyday residential users and
people running home or small offices to provide the peace of mind of one
flat rate plan .
The Woosh Everyday plan is subject to reasonable usage, determined at
our discretion, and is designed for the usage of most residential users .
Our current policy is to review the usage of customers who use around
10 times the median usage (current median 700MB p/month) . If
customers are consistently exceeding such an amount we will contact
them to discuss their usage patterns .
Woosh Wireless reserve the right to review this policy to ensure the
delivery of quality service to the majority of Woosh Everyday customers .

I find that the terms are inconsistent, & that advertising a plan as unlimited with regards to monthly MB usage is contradictory .
I have yet to check what recourse I would have should they attempt to terminate/change my service based on my “violation” of the reasonable use (as defined here)

230578 2004-04-21 02:58:00 dang it, I proofed that post heaps . . .

>say 8dB between Signal

Should be say 8dB between Signal to Noise . . .

30Gb? Dude, I don't work for Woosh or any other ISP but I would have guessed reasonable usage would be something less than 5Gb per month and closer to 2Gb. I thump mine, in terms of how much I am on it, the volume of email, how often my server checks for email, and I do backups of key data over the net and I still don't hit 500Mb a month without deliberately using my entitlement at the end of the month.

What do other people would think was "reasonable use"?

230580 2004-04-21 04:01:00 On the waverider plan previously I was hitting the theoretical maximum .

Upload & Download - 60Gb

I realize that I would be considered a high user . The Account type I have is unlimited & I make use of it . I see no reason to hold back .

If there are people out there who for want of a better term dawdle along with their broadband, thats fine by me ;-)

Woosh consider "reasonable as 10x the median (currently 7Gb/month) as mentioned in my previous post . . .

fgl is fine btw ;-)

Didn't spot that bit in your post. I don't have a problem with using what you're entitled to - that's why I download heaps of high res stills of a friends web site and recordings of his TV in US at the end of each month.

Just can't figure how you'd chew 70Gb in a month without having web radio playing 24x7 or something. It takes time to choose things to download unless you are sucking a complete DVD image or something.

I guess I am just surprised at that volume. 70Gb a month and you'd need a whopper of a disk unless you trash it after you download it.

230582 2004-04-21 04:21:00 So according to their interpretation you are using something over 4 times a "reasonable amount", and over 40 times the amount of the median users .

A truly "unlimited" account would need to be charged accordingly . Even so, excessive (greedy"?) users would be heavily subsidised by the reasonable ones .

Bandwidth is not free . Every byte costs money . Bandwidth will never be free .

Looks as if the only fair system would be to charge by volume . ]:)

I'm ducking now, and I won't respond (especially to abuse) . :D
