230550 2004-04-19 12:22:00 My D drive doesn’t seem to be able to read any of the CDs I put in, I tried to play Battlefield 1942 but it said that I need to insert the correct disk, which I had and then click ok, I done that and it just closed down. I uninstalled it and went to reinstall but it didn’t Auto run, I went into My Computer and double clicked (D:) then a box popped up that said ' D:\ is not accessible. The device in not ready.’ I went into start and then run and tried to access it from there, and then I got 'D: The Device is not ready.’ I don’t know what is going on, I have restarted my computer and the problem still happens. Any ideas? Tribomb (5547)
230551 2004-04-19 12:28:00 have you tried another cd in that drive just to rule out the possiblity that battlefield disk maybe the fault. beama (111)

230555 2004-04-19 13:38:00 sound like your CDrom drive is the fault.

try a lens cleaning CD (about $10 at dick smith)

if you still have no luck then it might be time to buy a new CDrom drive.

230557 2004-04-20 12:05:00 Will I just need to take in the case, or do I have to take out the CD-ROM drive? If so how?? Tribomb (5547)

It is not clear what you mean there Mike, but taking the advice given in two stages, no you don't need to remove anything if you are going to use a CD lens cleaner, it is inserted in the CD tray and runs by itself.

If you have to replace the CD drive, you will need to remove the outer case of your computer. This may require the use of a screwdriver, or it may just be clipped together. Screwed cases usually undo from screws around the perimeter of the rear, and for clip together typed, post the type of computer and somebody here will know the answer.

Once inside the case you will need a philips or posidrive type (cross-head)screwdriver to release the old drive but after that it is a simple unplug/replug job for the connections and you can't really go wrong.

DSE sell a neat little toolkit in a grey plastic box for about $10 that contains most of the tools needed for simple computer service if you don't have much in the way of tools.
