2004-04-19 08:31:00 | Hi all! I have recently bought a second-hand computer (400mhz), and due to its "limited'' capabilities decided on installing Win98SE on it. BIG MISTAKE!!!! as you have probably already worked out, the damn thing wont shutdown, unless I click shutdown as soon as I boot up (which kinda defeats the purpose of booting). Anyway, i searched around and found that this problem seems to be pretty common, and that MS have made a patch that is supposed to fix it. If anyone knows anything about MS patches, then you'll know what happend. it didn't work, of course. the thing still refuses to shutdown if i run any programs beforehand. I also saw something about network drive mapping, but I didnt pay much attention because the computer is not on a network. (it does, however have a network card, and what seems to be network software because when I boot up, instead of asking for my user password, its asks me for a network password). The rest of the computer seems to be OK, apart from the Explorer.exe page fault etc errors. (I assume these are due to a fresh install of windows and not many patches) Another thing that is strange, is that when I try to shutdown and it hangs at the shutdown screen, if I press the power button on the computer, the harddrive turns off, the PSU fan slows, and the power LED starts blinking, as if it's in standby mode or something. (Plus, when I turn the thing off at the wall as I am forced to do, there is no scandisk on the next startup). If anyone knows where i can hopefully download about 20 patches to fix it, that would be great, and other help is of course welcome. Thanks. | agent_24 (4330) | |
2004-04-19 08:44:00 | Try here HERE (exuberant.web1000.com) for an unofficial all-in-one Win98SE update. It covers most of the updates but after installing do the Windows Update thing as there are still a few more patches. Cheers Lucy

2004-04-19 12:59:00 | Thanks, LucyL and beama for your help. I seem to have fixed the problem in the bios. In there is a power management option. under that you can choose whether the power button is a normal power button, or a standby button. it was set to standby. (that explains the standby problem). Anyway- it seems to be all working now, if not, i shall post another message on this thread saying so. Those websites you reccomended seem pretty helpful, too. | agent_24 (4330) | |
2004-04-20 01:27:00 | Oh hello. No, it's decided to not work again. | agent_24 (4330) | |
2004-04-20 01:33:00 | i looked in the bootlog too, and all the stuff that is meant to terminate seem to have done so. | agent_24 (4330) | |
2004-04-20 02:40:00 | A fix I have used many times for 98SE shutdown problems is to visit the windows update site. You don't need to install any of the updates, just allow it to install the latest windows update active x control. | BIFF (1) | |
2004-04-20 03:05:00 | I would suggest that if you are not using the network card, to remove it, or disable it it in Device Manager, maybe also check in BIOS to see if there is any network setting and disable. I have had similar problems with networked Win98 computers when the ethernet cable has been disconnected, and the OS has become confused.

2004-04-20 08:25:00 | Thanks again, everyone. I seem to have nailed the problem completely. Disabling norton's floppy-scan-on-shutdown causes the computer to actually shutdown now, no matter what i have been doing beforehand. | agent_24 (4330) | |
