230465 2004-04-19 06:49:00 I recently bought a new harddrive and so decided to move the contents of my older harddrive to the new one. I moved the whole partition (which contains Windows XP) to the new harddrive and moved another partition from another older harddrive (containing data) to another partition on the new HD. Now the new HD has 2 partition, one with win XP and one with data. I moved it all with Partition magic 7

After the move, the computer wouldn't start up and showed a "NTLDR is missing" message (probably because the drive wasn't set up properly). I went to microsoft site (on another comp) and then followed the instructions: I booted from a windows 98 disk and backed up msdos.sys by doing: "attrib -h -r -s C:\msdos.sys",
and then: "rename msdos.sys *.ysy"
and then did: "sys C:"

actual instructions here : support.microsoft.com

I thought everything was done, but when I restarted, it turned out booting as Windows 98 (maybe because it was an upgrade from 98 to XP),but also unsuccessful and with missing file messages etc. Now I don't know how to boot to my Windows Xp anymore. The recovery console didn't work, because I can't get into it (CD drive not bootable)

Can someone tell me what to do??

230466 2004-04-19 07:00:00 I think you need to copy your MBR across as well. There are tools on the Internet that can do this I believe. Try Google for one. Pheonix (280)
230467 2004-04-19 07:00:00 Download a boot disk for your version of XP (www.bootdisk.com), and place it on the required number of floppy disks.

This will probably boot you into a minimal console system (reminiscent of DOS) with a CD-ROM driver. From here you should be able to insert your XP CD and run the recovery console, which may even be an option on the boot disk itself.

If you get the Recovery Console running (you will most likely get this done by running a setup program off the CD), and the RC finds your XP partition, you should be able to logon and run the program "fixmbr".

However, it may be that you should have used a drive imaging tool such as Norton Ghost to move the contents of your old HDD to the new one.

230468 2004-04-19 07:13:00 I did move the MBR as well, but it still booted as though it was Win98 ( it even had the startup page with the logo in the centre).

The recovery console won't run if i try accessing it through a startup disk and running a setup program from the CD won't load RC, because RC won't load in DOS.

Also the original contents from the original 2 HD is already gone.

230469 2004-04-22 23:46:00 Can someone tell me what the sys C: command does?

Coz I think that if it replaces some of the win XP files with win 98 files, then i would have to do more than just replace the MBR.

Thanks
