| 230867 | 2004-04-21 02:12:00 | I'm looking at getting an external USB2 . 0 HDD enclosure along with another HDD to use for backing up and general storage . Are there any pitfuls or common mistakes to watch out for when buying a case? Is it wise to get a case with a fan? Are there any power issues to be concerned about? Are aluminium cases better then the plastic ones? What should I expect to pay? I have been looking at Trademe and Price Spy but would appreciate some advice from some people in the know . Thanks as always Mantis . |

| 230868 | 2004-04-21 04:32:00 | I have two plastic case 3.5 external drives and 1 plastic 2.5 external drive and they all work flawlessly. All are usb 2 and one is also firewire capable. Both the 3.5 drives have fans while the 2.5 doesn't. I use 5400rpm drives in the 3.5's and they rarely get more than luke warm to the touch. The 2.5 is tiny and usb powered which makes it very handy to to tote around large files and apps (40gig). No pitfalls that I have encountered but if u do get one, try to check that it has a standard computer powercord as one of mine takes a propriatry power cord which is a pain to carry around with you and a hassle if you lose it. I've seen 3.5 boxes going for as little as 40 bucks (usb 2 only) but Ice brand external drive case (which I use) seem to roam around the hundred dollar mark Be aware that while they are usb 1 backward compatible, large files take a loooooong time to down/up load on older machines The aluminium ones definitely look nicer though :-) |

| 230870 | 2004-04-21 06:43:00 | Thanks for the feedback/advice... I was looking at fitting a 80gb seagate 7200 rpm to whatever case I decided on getting... <- Simply because these seemed pretty cheap and reliable. Would you reccommend a case with a fan for a 7200rpm HDD? Alot of the plastic cases I have looked at on trademe do not mention if they have a fan... I will have a hunt online for the Ice brand you have mentioned. Chill, was this a deal somewhere or was it simply right place, right time? Thanks again people. Much Appreciated. Mantis. |
