230731 2004-04-20 09:38:00 Recently downloaded Windows Media Player Version 9, and for some reason it appears on the desktop at start-up...Have looked in all the options and information in the programs folder, but cannot find anything to turn off that option ?

OS: XP Home

Cheers Linz

230732 2004-04-21 00:41:00 Are you referring to the Media Players icon appearing on the desktop at startup or WMP being loaded at startup?

If the latter then prevent it from starting up by unchecking it from the startup tab in the msconfig window.

230733 2004-04-21 20:08:00 The player itself is loading...
I typed in "misconfig" in the Run window and am told Windows cannot find it ?
And now I find my Dial-Up Connection is on the Desktop at Start-Up ?
Have done a full Virus Scan, but to no avail...
I know my way round my PC pretty well, and dont dig into areas that I'm not familiar with, and feel that I have'nt clicked on anything I shouldn't have !
Recently had my operating system re-installed as the whole shebang crashed (after months of use without any problems at all...)

230735 2004-04-21 21:58:00 You might need to type msconfig in the run box not misconfig :) B.M. (505)

As B.M has suggested, use the command msconfig.

Hmm ... I'm kind of confused here. Are you saying that your computer tries to dial out every time you start your PC?

230737 2004-04-22 09:28:00 Yessir, Rule No.1 Check your spelling....ooops "msconfig NOT "misconfig"!!
Did that, and after restarting was told that I was in Diagnostic or Selective mode...(is that okay?) but WMPlayer wasn't there at Start-up....maybe problem solved...
As far as my Dial-Up Connection appearing at the same time, that has only just started in the last day or so, PLUS the quick start icons on the taskbar disappeared ? I seemed to have solved that by restoring PC back a few days...
Johnboy, I checked the links you mentioned and it did sound like I had aquired one of those horrible trojan 'tings, but Spybot couldnt find anything..have downloaded a couple of their applications and will check further...It certainly sounds like the above, I mean where the hell did I aquire the "MySearch Toolbar" ? (difficult to get rid of too !)
Thanks for all your help, I might leave this thread open a little longer just in case !

230739 2004-04-22 10:16:00 Thanks Jim B....it pleaded with me not to kill it, but I had to be hard, after all I never asked for it in the first place !
Funny thing though, I did this previously and the Bx@#^d came back, must be something I have installed for another reason...we shall see.
