| 231078 | 2004-04-22 00:34:00 | Have any readers out there looked at the possibility of using voice calls over the internet. I have emailed a few VOIP providers in the States and they have replied that as long as I have a reliable broadband connection that they will send me the equipment to use if I sign up with them. Of course Telecom does not want to know about this technology as it would seriously erode its profit margins. Thanks in advance. |

I might be wrong here, but I dont think you will have much luck using VOIP with an US ISP, as I dont think NZ telephone network it up to it &/or you might get a bit lag over a 256K connection. |

Apparently, Telecom holds the stance that if VoIP were implemented on a large scale in this country, the KiwiShare agreement should be abandoned because they would lose a substantial amount of revenue. VoIP is an innovative technology, but it requires a significant amount of bandwidth, I believe, and so even if you did sign up with a US provider, and everything worked out, you would need at least a 512Kbps connection. |
