1360349 2013-11-20 17:50:00 Personally I'd stick with the older SPybot, the new one sucks. pctek (84)

What is your reasoning behind that comment pctek - is it not effective or what in your oponion?

1360351 2013-11-20 19:55:00 I wouldn't bother installing it. There are better programs around Speedy Gonzales (78)

1360353 2013-11-20 20:20:00 Well malwarebytes is probably better. You dont have to install EVERY anti-malware program on the planet. To be safe. Myself I dont use anything. Besides whats on Win 8.1

Just be careful what you do, where you go. And what you download / install. Keep windows up to date

1360354 2013-11-20 21:17:00 I just installed SpyBot S&D 2.1 yesterday on Win8.1, seems ok. My browser issue in Win8.1 existed before I installed S&D, so it can't be the cause of it.

Although S&D 2.x is annoying in that it forces 3 services to run in the background even if you unticked them during the install! That's easily fixed, just disable them and turn off the auto start. It is much easier to do that in Win8.x now, don't need to run msconfig, just bring up TaskManager and go to the StartUp and Services Tab, right-click on the annoying start/service and choose disable. Be careful what you disable though!

Quickiest way to bring up Task Manage is Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or you can do the old fash Ctrl + Alt + Del then choose TaskManager, or Win + X for power menu and choose Task Manager

The Immunization function in S&D is pretty good, it stops people from stumbling onto bad sites. I regularly use both S&D and MalwareByte to clean up other people's PCs, they pick up different things. MalwareByte used to be heaps better at picking up and fixing things than S&D, but I think they do find different things. The latest version of MalwareByte also wants to run in the background now, very annoying, but easily fix too! I only use them on demand on people's computer, hardly use it on my own as I am very careful where I go on the net.

Oh, I also use Rkill to kill active malware in memory, as some of them prevent from running S&D and Malwarebyte. Once you kill them from memory, you can then run S&D or MalwareByte to clean up.

P.S. Beware the rKill kills just about everything in memory, so make sure you don't have any un-saved documents open at the time you run rkill, as you might lose them.
