1339545 2013-05-03 23:29:00 Seems about right to me and would explain why there were fair people here when Abel Tasman and Cook were here.
The fact the author is a Navy Captain ( Rank) is good enough for me, I think this guy has nailed it, mystery solved.

1339546 2013-05-03 23:36:00 I read 1421 a few years ago - well-written and very plausible.

This

Yesterday, Waikato University revealed it had asked Menzies to stop using its data on his website and in his books.

"We asked him to remove those, not because we were not happy with the dates, but because we were not overly happy with being associated with his interpretations of those dates," said Fiona Petchey of Waikato's internationally recognised carbon-dating unit.

is ridiculous. Tantamount to saying "Stop using facts to support your argument"

1339548 2013-05-04 00:56:00 Perhaps an example of "an inconvenient truth", where the facts support a different story from the politics? johcar (6283)

Or "Quote any carbon dating data you wish as long as it's ours"

Also worth reading is Ancient Celtic New Zealand by Martin Doutre.
His conclusions are similar excepting he talks about Celts rather than Chinese being the orginal settlers.

Classic Ivory Tower syndrome.
Particularly prevalent in Waikato.

1339551 2013-05-04 01:31:00 For the past fifty years debate has raged over where Maori came from . Some say China, through Taiwan; others Indonesia . Microbiologist Adele White of Victoria University used mitochondrial (mtDNA female line) DNA to trace Maori origins back as far as mainland Asia . But where in Asia?

The answer to the Asian source came, surprisingly, when researchers were looking at the gene for alcohol . Adele`s supervisor, Dr Geoff Chambers, found a match between one of the variant genes for alcohol with people from Taiwan, so it seemed the original homeland of the Maori people was Taiwan . Or was it? When Dr Chambers` team studied the Y (male) chromosome, they found a different story . While the females came from Taiwan, their studies showed that most of the men came from Melanesia, around Papua New Guinea .

Dr Chambers, a zoologist at Victoria University, said: "The information that has come from several studies in my laboratory turns out to be consistent with a pattern of migration over many centuries, starting with an ancestral population in mainland Asia . "

He believes Maori migrated from mainland China to Taiwan, the Philippines, the Pacific Islands and eventually New Zealand . Dr Chambers says less genetic variation among Maoris and Polynesians indicates it is likely they have repeatedly migrated over history . Later research suggests that indigenous Taiwanese came originally, not from China, but from countries around and including Burma (Myanmar) .

So maybe the 1421 guy may well have a case . Does this mean we will actually find "Made in Taiwan" stamped on Maori somewhere? And what does this mean for Imagration, we now have a country where at least 10% are over stayers .
