1339721 2013-05-06 05:56:00 Having previously been 26 years in an occupation where a large part of my job has been off-road driving in mud/ snow/ rocks I enjoy a television programme called "Dangerous Roads". Some of the roads shown are indeed very hairy but many very similar to those which I used to encounter.
However, I find it intriguing that while the programme often has sequences of extreme mud or snow with the vehicles becoming bogged to varying degrees - never a sign of tyre chains.
Fascinating !

Go look for the Dave Redmond videos on Youtube. He has blown the cover on how the series were filmed with behind the scenes chat that the producers dont approve of.

1339722 2013-05-06 06:10:00 Do snow tyres work as well as chains?

Like Gary said a bit better than you standard tyres! However not to be confused with M+S tyres (mud and snow), also regulations for NZ now mean treads got to be more than 4mm for a wof and same tyre make/brand on all four corners. I have been driving a shuttle on the Ruapehu access roads to the ski areas in winter even with Snow Tyres we still end up chaining up the buses even the 4wd. They give a limited comfort zone before becoming useless, got it down to a quick and fine art getting heavy chains on a Heavy Transport vehicle. Not nice when you get them wrong :)

On my car got quick fit chains and I prefer them to 4wd probably beacuse I can drive in the conditions and know my and cars limits. One minute per side maximum to fit much to the annoyance and surprise of many ski bunnies who visit the mountains in winter. Besides when there is even a few flakes of snow on the road Highways tend to close roads! Couple years back we slipped and slid all over the central plateau getting staff to the ski area in the morning then some twit from Highways coming on shift at 730am declared the roads dangerous even though from our point of view things were getting better.

Definately 4mm and all 4 corners and yes sorry may have typed misleading info with make/brand when I was meaning ake/brand as in Snow tyres. Otherwise same rules for tyres apply.

1339728 2013-05-06 07:19:00 Last winter a Fire Brigade on the southern end of Lake Taupo got Snow tyres for its two brand new ivecos. The drivers undertook familarity driver training on them across the district and where best to test them but on the mountain access road of whakapapa :) On of the days they went up there was a restricted day (chains 4wd) except the "officer" used the line of being a fire truck therfore we can go anywhere to the unsuspecting roadie on the barrier. I passed this vehicle on the way down pointed out it was only a 2wd truck and I had chains on with snow tyres. Needless to say radio chatter quickly up the mountain and stuck on the road was....yup a fire truck...duh. Two local brigades have 4wds for a reason this was an epic fail! coldfront (15814)
