1338928 2013-04-30 01:59:00 Bottom line is : for 99% of us, you cant get fat without overeating.
& its not just fatty foods, too much bread is just as bad as too much sugar (long term) .
Perhaps a bread ban is needed, or WW2 rationing ?

Some old doco wont be any sort of indication. The uglies tend not to be filmed.
There would have been many many fatties back then (Churchill & Goring come to mind, a few overweight US Generals as well) > less fatties in the countries with extreme food rationing of course.

You are right about bread being a problem, the English Post-war Loaf (Cmd. 6701) in 1945 really stuffed up the value of bread, if they would re-instate it back to what it was would make a more healthy world.

1338931 2013-04-30 04:09:00 One word: Television and PC's (ok two words). :D

But let's be honest, metabolism is set at an early age and if kids don't go out playing for enough hours of the day their future does not look as good as it did for us old codgers back then.

1338932 2013-04-30 07:14:00 Simple maths really, if calories consumed > calories burned, you store the remaining calories as fat.
At last a person talking sense.
If you can get fat when calories out are higher than calories in you have beaten the first law of energy and are into perpetual motion.
I do not like fat people in fact I hate them. If you want to lose weight you start by stopping the throwing of excess food down your neck and exercise. As for genetics **** well I haven't seen a fat person in a photo of Jap POWS.

It doesn't always come down to bad eating and lack of exercise though, plenty of other factors may cause weight gain - my ex-girlfriend's epilepsy medication, for example. pcuser42 (130)
1338934 2013-04-30 10:01:00 Decades ago people did more physical work and ate up the calories even though more fatty food may have been consumed in the diet. Today we have all kinds of gadgets which does the physical work for us. We now eat all kinds of processed foods that have added ingredients to make them taste better i.e. sugar, fat, etc. Takeaway foods are also an easy but less healthy option to preparing your own food. 1338936 2013-04-30 13:27:00 It's the TV and games really. I swear kids these days just don't go outside. It doesn't help that schools support it by telling parents to buy them tablets and laptops.

I mean, seriously. Walk through Wellington High School (Next to Massey) and most of the kids are dicking around on phones, laptops and tablets. They huddle in the shade and play Nikki Minaj and talk about how "hot" person x is and "OMG Nikki Minaj's new song is soooooo awesome" (Kill me now?)

At one point I overheard a photography class being taught. Their weapon of choice? iPads... Just about shat my pants and died. What can be taught about photography with an iPad... of all things! THE most retarded camera on the planet. Of all current iOS devices it has the WORST camera too!!!

I seriously wish I could escape a good 60 years into the past. I'm no saint, I use my phone a lot and play ingress (result is looking like you're glued to your phone :p) and use my laptop more than I should. I eat crap food and don't exercise enough.

Give me 1950 and I'd be signed up doing manual labour to pay for flight time faster than you could say morbidly obese.

Today's society is f****!

1338937 2013-04-30 16:56:00 Processing film during the war (esp on ships) would have been hard enough, without having to worry about the technicalities of colour. Esp since colour was very expensive and hard to get right at the time.

You do realise, that pretty much all of it is colourized, right?
Almost nothing was shot in colour.
