231530 2004-04-23 08:36:00 I am about to start to put together (with outside help :) ) my new PC.

I have 2 hard drives to install - an 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 IDE ATA133 and a 120GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus Serial ATA.

Onto which hard drive should I install my o/s and why?

231531 2004-04-23 08:47:00 if you were to decide purely on BUS, then the seagate, if you were to look at it in terms of storage? then the Maxtor.

just remember the one you decide on has to be the master ie "C"

You should able to rig the bios and/or boot.ini file so it boots off whichever drive XP Pro is installed on, whether "C", master or otherwise.

>benchmark them and put the OS on the fastest

benchmark them and put the OS on the faster (but the advice is good)

231534 2004-04-23 21:57:00 Stoopid question I know, but how do I benchmark a HDD without an o/s?

Is there a benchmark programme on the latest PC World CD ROM?

231535 2004-04-23 22:44:00 You could try this one (www.majorgeeks.com) that has been recommended to me, though I have not tried it myself. Susan B (19)
231536 2004-04-23 22:47:00 Not sure how you would test them without an OS but if it were me I would maybe install Win XP on both (one at a time) and test each. The faster one will then get to keep the OS.

Wait until an expert confirms that theory though because I am no expert. ;-)
