231159 2004-04-22 08:45:00 Hi all
I'm just woundering about the limitations of Zone Alarm or other firewalls.
I have ZoneAlarm and AGV installed but somehow I had dialers install themself, also sites have made there own bookmarks. I thought a firewall was designed to limit this action.......

231160 2004-04-22 09:08:00 No it is just another form of what is collectively called Scumware.
A firewall stops access from and to your computer, much like a doorman at a nightclub. He lets in/out people sanction to be there, but does not gaurantee they do not carry knives or drugs on them.
Now to slow down these things, you utilise other programs apart from the conventional Anti-Virus programs. ( There are a lot of people out there who get their rocks off by thinking up different ways to annoy others.) The free, and incidentaly the better ones, are Ad-aware and Spybot search&destroy. These scan and clean spyware and diallers from your system. There is also another worth mentioning that acts like an "innoculation" against many of these. It is called SpywareBlaster. Just another in the battle to retain control of your PC.
Ad-aware here (www.majorgeeks.com)
Spybot here (www.majorgeeks.com)
SpywareBlaster here (www.majorgeeks.com)

Have fun.

Yep.... you are your best firewall!

Don't download and install something without checking out what it is you are installing, and read the agreements/read me files in programs :)

231163 2004-04-22 09:23:00 Dialer programs are normally installed on your computer when you are not careful about what you allow to be installed . If you click OK on pop-up boxes on websites, especially "dodgy" websites, eg porn, cracks, key gens, etc, to gain access to these things then you are exposing your computer to these sorts of risks .

The moral of the story is to not click OK on anything without a good dose of caution .
