I've an old Gateway computer circa 2000 in which I'm attempting to replace the existing dvd-rom and cd-rewriter with the equivalent but newer model drives. All I've done is simply replace each drive with the new one, keeping the same jumper settings and using the same cables as originally attached to the old ones. However upon restarting the computer does not appear to recognize the new drives, although the lights do initially light up on the drives to confirm that power is getting through. It's also possible to successfully use the eject button in this initial period, but not subsequently when the computer has fully restarted. I've also put the old drives back in and now the computer cannot recognize these either so I'm assuming the problem is not with the new drives but something to do with the setup procedure. I've checked that all the cables are fitted correctly. The OS is windows 98SE which I recently reinstalled. |
