231515 2004-04-23 09:05:00 Hey guys... here's one for the photo and image experts?

I have a collection of about 14 pictures that I want to put on my web site.

Now as you can imagine I don't want to just place the large images onto the web site. What I would like to do is, have a gallery of thumbnails, that way people can see all the pictures at once and then just click the one they want to view and it will open up on it's own, in my main frameset or in new page (whichever I choose.)

Now I've been looking for an application that will do this for me... I've been fiddling with Adobe Photoshop 6 but I can't seem to find the appropriate command (if any) that will perform the desired effect I want.

Is Photoshop 6 capable of doing this or can anyone suggest an application that I may use to do the desired task I am looking for.

cheers

231517 2004-04-23 09:41:00 seeing as you already have a site i assume you know enough about html/xml codeing to write the web page.

all that needs to be done is to make thumbnail pics which is simply a resized and redused quailty pic. most image editors includeing free ones can do that. for a simple app try jpegcompress (www.dreamscapesoftware.com) or ifranveiw.

231518 2004-04-23 10:06:00 Supergran, that site may have reduced image size, but when you visit, you are still loading the full image up. So it still takes as long as loading up all of the full size images. Test it and see, click on a link and it will open instantly, that means its already been loaded.

Yeah I recommend irfanview and just a resize in the photos.

231521 2004-04-23 12:14:00 Hey Chiefnz, I think I owe you one. :-)

45South posted a link to Jalbum (http://jalbum.net/) a couple of months ago which looks pretty good. Have downloaded it but have not got around to having a play with myself yet.

There is another excellent program that will create thumbnails for you as well but I can't find the link to it at the moment. It is on this forum somewhere if you want to do a search yourself. If Jester drops by he may remember what one it is because I put him onto it, otherwise I'll try and find it this weekend. :-)

231522 2004-04-23 12:20:00 Yes Photoshop will do this for you easily and write all the HTML pages for you as well.

File
Automate
Web Photo Gallery...

Just select the source directory and the destination and Bingo it's that easy. It will make thumnails and also resize them for screen.

231524 2004-04-23 12:52:00 I do remember the program Susan, it was good (can't for the life of me recall the name now).

What I do now is re size the orignals in windows explorer using XP's own image resizer (right click and select custom size then select what pixel width and height I want or select the Windows CE option size). It produces a nice small pic usually 6 - 10kbs with a new name.

Also if you highlight a lot of files in explorer with XP, then right click and select rename on the first one, and put (1) after it, it renames them all the same name, sequentially (2) (3) etc.

I then load the small files with the originals that they link to in the same folder on the web space.

Code:

XX (1) (Custom).jpg (XX (1).jpg)
XX (2) (Custom).jpg (XX (2).jpg)
XX (3) (Custom).jpg (XX (3).jpg)
XX (4) (Custom).jpg (XX (4).jpg)
XX (5) (Custom).jpg (XX (5).jpg)
XX (6) (Custom).jpg (XX (6).jpg)
XX (7) (Custom).jpg (XX (7).jpg)
XX (8) (Custom).jpg (XX (8).jpg)
XX (9) (Custom).jpg (XX (9).jpg)

Where XX is your image. This produces thumbnails that will fit what ever size the window that the viewer uses as well. Double handling with copies of the originals but faster to load the thumbnails :)
