| 231714 | 2004-04-24 09:49:00 | ADSL is not the problem - it was only the catalyst. Yesterday I changed ISP's (Paradise to Xtra) and went from dial-up to the 1Gig surf plan. Installation was fine and standard internet access came up straightaway. Tried Outlook Express and dragged in all the mail that was waiting for me. Final check - I tried to write myself a letter. Express kept telling me that "the connection to the server has failed." Hit the Xtra helpdesk and a helpful young lass went through all my settings and said they were just fine and that Outlook was not the problem. Her advice is that I would have to uninstall Norton AV 2002 or use Xtra's webmail service for outgoing mail. Now I am naive enough to believe that Norton is worthwhile and webmail, as a fulltime option, doesn't do anything for me at all. Being a natural sceptic I reversed the settings on Outlook today and went back to Paradise on dial-up.. Email flooded in but outgoing email which was working fine on Friday morning has gone on strike. I get the same error message as I was getting on Xtra ADSL. Does anyone have any ideas??? |

| 231715 | 2004-04-24 10:23:00 | Firstly, the ISP which you are with should not matter . Next, seeing as you are experiencing the same problems when you went back to Paradise Dialup, it can be suspected that some thing within the computer, e . g . settings, etc . may of been changed . How this happened could have come from many factors, new software installed? The ADSL modem/router software? My advice, if you have Windows XP (I think it may only be available on the Professional version), if to do a restore back to the day before you had anything to do with ADSL, i . e . before you installed modem, etc . Then connect with your Paradise email . . . see if it works, if it does, then it must be something that probably hasn't gone "as it should" whilst getting ADSL up and running . It would also be helpful (maybe . . . ) if you posted back with the changes you have made during this time, including brand/model of ADSL equipment, etc . If it goes ok after the restore, you will need to do more detective work ;-) |

| 231717 | 2004-04-24 10:43:00 | Thank you both and now that I have finished banging my head against the floor I am able to say the the problem is fixed. Why outgoing on Paradise won't work is still a mystery as I restored (hopefully) the original settings. As for Xtra, I did what I should have done in the first instance. I went to their website and worked through the settings myself and found that I should have the outgoing server port set as 25. Mine was set to 7362 and the helpdesk lady didn't call it as a problem. Such is life. |
