231816 2004-04-24 11:39:00 Hi all,
I've gone mad and am contemplating upgrading my pokey little 14" for a 32" widescreen beast. It's a Philips, with 100Hz and progressive scan, and a flat tube. I've talked the salesperson into a better deal than originally offered, but I want to know if anyone has any experiences to share with these sets? Any good? Any bad? Particular quirks or faults. I'm going in tommorow to sign the paperwork, so speedy responses appreciated. If this a good purchase?
Cheers

231817 2004-04-24 11:48:00 Would be off benefit if you provided the actual model number.

ps I sell these things in my part-time job away from study so may be off help IF you can confirm the actual model number
Is it the 32PW8521 ?

231818 2004-04-24 12:13:00 Yes if you could let us know the model and price we'll be able to let ya know if its a deal or not. I sell the things for a living and my personal preference is either the Phillips 32pw8521 or higher or the Panasonic 200 series tele's. A lot of buying a tv is personal preference and every eye sees colour and picture differently so find one that YOU like the look of, also BEWARE of stores that will not put normal television onto a tv. DVD makes almost any TV look great and easy to sell. dipstick01 (445)
231819 2004-04-24 13:13:00 Seriously, there is bugga all difference between the brands on sale . The average JoeBlo wouldn't be able to tell what brand was what and what was the cheapest or dearest set if all the brand names were taken off the sets .

After a 14" any 32" will seem like heaven

231820 2004-04-24 13:16:00 Oh, and most shop assistants will try and sell you the dearest set they have in stock. Although they will scream blue murder that they wouldn't dare do that. StevieRay (4739)
231821 2004-04-24 21:16:00 lol stevie. Sadly you are grouping all salespeople together. I myself do NOT care which TV etc customers buy, I am on salary not commision so I get the same paycheck every week regardless of which brand or priced stuff I sell. The brand does make a difference and it does even come down to the model also. To see my point it is as simple as looking at 2 TV's side by side both playing the same thing. Hell that applies to stereo's and generally most other electrical appliances. Check out the posts in here with regards to different Brands of PC.

There is vast differences between various brands and models but as I mentioned earlier everyone sees and hears things differently so the idea is to find what suits you and which one you enjoy the most.

231822 2004-04-24 23:24:00 well coming from the repair side of things i would advoid philips tv's (unless you are getting the top end sets ($5000+) which are made far better). however philips are cheaper than the other main brands.

i had a look at one of the 50hz sony tv's and it had a far better picture than most 100hz tv's.

231823 2004-04-25 00:01:00 Thanks guys
Can't recall the exact model number, though a scan of the Philips webpage seems to indicate it is the low end model of the three 32PW models they offer (i.e. 100hz scan, but no PIP)
I'm quite happy with the tv so far - the salesperson has taken $200 off, and I may be able to get even more shaved off today (got two different stores competing with each other)
So long as there aren't any horror stories, that's good enough for me...
Thanks

231824 2004-04-25 00:32:00 I think I've got the previous model to that. I find the SCART inputs limiting, especially that you can't directly access an AV input from remote.
Scart design seems to assume that only 1 source will be powered up at a time. Ask what the dealer will do if your set has colour purity problems (mainly visible on B+W)as Philips haven't included much in the way of adjustment apparently.
Panasonic have user control if room location causes colour blotching.

231825 2004-04-25 00:41:00 I have just got a philips 32" widescreen through as an insurance replacement. I can't remember the exact model off the top of my head, however it is the one down from the pixel plus.

If I could do it all again ..... I wouldn't have got the philips.

The 100hz is of no real benefit, it appears to be a poor implementation of it.

The onscreen graphics are silly, to see the volume display you have to choose the full option which leaves to channel displayed at the top of the screen. Highly annoying.

The picture geometry is poor.

The overall picture quality is disappointing ....

It was a replacement for a top range philips 34" which is no longer available ..... I really wish I had my old 34" back.

The pixel plus models have a far better picture however they are around $500 more. When I was looking at the replacement I asked the tech who was looking at our old TV what he would choose himself.

Not counting the top line brands, it went:

Panasonic
Philips - with pixel plus
Sony
Philips - without pixel plus
