231647 2004-04-23 19:35:00 When I boot up the machine I get the message "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2". Have not noticed anything else amiss but have had the message a few times. Seems (but certainly far from certain) that it tied in with a Windows update.

I am on Windows ME.

What does the message signify and what can I do about it please ?

231648 2004-04-23 19:51:00 Update on problem -
It may be tied in with something occuring (or rather not occuring !).
I have checked for Windows updates and found a Critical update for IE6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167). It seems to download alright but after re-booting and going back to the update site, it shows as an update still to be done ! Am sure that I have been through this cycle already but this is the first time that I have specifically recorded the specs so as to be absolutely certain.

231649 2004-04-26 05:14:00 The error message indicates some confusion.;-) The "%1" and "%2" are supposed to be replaced by (probably) a filename, and a location before it's displayed. So not only can the system not install a file, it doesn't know which file, nor where it's supposed to come from. :O

Perhaps a bump will stir someone's memory ...

231650 2004-04-26 13:04:00 Have you tried downloading the update from Microsoft and saving it onto your computer, instead of letting it install itself.

Then manually install the update by double clicking on it.

231651 2004-05-07 23:52:00 Hi Rob
I have tried a manual download and that appeared successful, but then when I checked with the update site it still says that I need KB831167 .

I have tried deleting the update and then re-installing - however again the same result .

For weeks I have continued to have problems with KB831167 . On checking I am advised that it had downloaded "successfully" on five separate occasions by the M/S Update site . When I checked, however, to see what had downloaded then I was told again that I needed KB831167 .

Have tried (and tried, and tried) very hard .
What am I doing so wrong please ???

231652 2004-05-10 08:14:00 I am scared that the silence means that I should re-instal Windows ME ?

I hope not because that seems a scary thing to do !!

231653 2004-05-10 08:27:00 I am not sure how to turn auto update off in ME but if you can turn it off.
Remember every now and then to check for updates manually.
Just ignore when it tells you need that update as you know you have already installed it.

231654 2004-05-10 08:36:00 Yes, Rob
I suppose that it could just be the M/S search that it faulty and my update is fine. There is a "remove" facility on the website.

I tried what they suggested a few mins ago, which was very straightforward, but unfortunately it did not work so I will now go back to them with their Plan B .
