232299 2004-04-27 00:58:00 I have just udated ME to XP which seemed to go okay, exept that my new XP system will not allow me to install/uninstall programmes. I keep getting a message saying ' The windows installer system could not be accessed. This can occur if windows installer is not correctly installed or if running in safe mode' --- The installation has no other problems and is not running in safe mode ----- has anyone had this problem? any ideas?
I might have to go back to ME

232300 2004-04-27 01:06:00 It is highly recommended that Windows XP be clean installed on a freshly formatted computer rather than over the top of an older version of Windows. You are far more likely to have less problems. Susan B (19)
232301 2004-04-27 01:07:00 doing an UPGRADE is often a problem.

if you can i would sugest backing up your stuff, formating your hard drive and installing XP clean.

if you need step by step instructions then just ask.

what CPU / RAM are you running?

XP needs a lot of grunt to run well.

232303 2004-04-27 11:01:00 You might want to check that the Installer service is running and not disabled on your system.

To check this, go Start > Run. Enter in services.msc. Look for the "Window Installer" service and right-click on it to get into Properties. Set the start-up to Automatic and click OK.

232304 2004-04-27 13:27:00 this is how ms locks you into buying more stuff...

You buy an upgrade cos its fractionally cheaper but still a freakin rip off...

You upgrade but MS have fixed it so your system runs jumpy from an upgrade so you want a clean install. But an upgrade won't install to an empty hdd...

Hence you are funnelled into buying the complete package at some ridiculous price.

Upgrades would probly run fine if MS didn't want even more money....

Ummmm, not always. I built a new system, with a new hard drive. I purchased the XP academic upgrade O/S (wife is a student/teacher), and all I had to do was put my Win98SE disk into the drive at one stage. It recognised it, ejected it, then I was prompted to place the XP disk back in to continue.

No need to install 98 in order to 'upgrade'.
