232288 2004-04-30 00:31:00 Do old computers get menopause? Symptoms sound a lot like my wife. oggy (1250)
232289 2004-04-30 01:56:00 It could be the power supply as mentioned, but it could also be a
corrupt bios from a virus, flash the bios and your problem might be fixed

232290 2004-04-30 04:27:00 The switch is fed 5V through a resistor (pullup) from 5VSB. That wire is a logic level. Pushing the switch shorts it, and gives a logic low level pulse for as long as you hold the switch in. It's that pulse which is needed to operate logic on the motherboard.

The motherboard would "assert" a level on that pin 14 to make the PSU stay on. That would be high or low. I don't know which, but probably low. So you might need to link pin 14 to ground for it to work.

I'd be inclined to take the 5VSB through a resistor to the high side of the switch. That won't do any damage. Shorting (or putting 5V on) the motherboard line to pin 14 might.

232291 2004-04-30 11:50:00 Have you tried unplugging the switch from the mother board and bridging the pins to start the computer, I have done this a few times and it works fine. This would tell you if the problem lies with the switch or the mother board.

232292 2004-04-30 13:17:00 Contact bing, and ask for the other half of his bottle of Speights. Pour it into the computer, and make a claim on your insurance policy - thereby getting a new computer or yours fixed free StevieRay (4739)
232293 2004-04-30 21:46:00 I used to work in a place where first thing in the morning we'd prop a fan heater up to blow on the tower for ten minutes otherwise the comp wouldn't start.

Strange but True. :D

No. Don't.

232295 2004-05-01 12:18:00 I'm sure it was a joke StevieRay but I agree with Jester - don't.

Lots of ordinarily honest people think it is OK to make false insurance claims. And sometimes they get away with it. But it is still fraud.

Honesty is a matter of integrity which each person has to decide for themselves. They may get away with dishonest behavior but they still know what they have done.

Here endeth the homily. :D

232296 2004-05-01 12:58:00 The saga continues!
I exchanged the reset plug for the power plug and it worked. Booted & shut down several times, got all embarassed because there was some looseness in the plug. Refitted the covers.
It has refused to go ever since!!!
I tried a new power unit but it was just the same. I will now try the resistor idea.
Value for the resistor has been given from 4Kohm to 8Kohm. How critcal is this?

Good luck in finding a solution mzee!
