231988 2004-04-26 02:04:00 Ok i gotta dig here,

and what if it was someone like Me who wanted to make / build there own PC?????

how long is every one going on holiday so you dont have to help beetle with her thousand questions on PF1 when it all goes wrong???

:D

considering the fact that i dont know what these components look like most of the time let alone putting them together to resemble a computer near the end......

i would have to say i would be visiting Metla a lot to the point he will shut the shop doors and say he's gone to afganistan or somethink dont ya think???

i would like to one day have a home built comp but it may be built by some one else not me, with me as overseer i spose....... as i do not feel i am safe enough or geeky enough to put one together.

so yeah im one of these dont touch the comp people Metla and others may be talking about......

:D

its ok ...i have no plans of doing anything of the kind this year......... have no $$$ for it to start with...lol so no extended leave forms need to be filled in a hurry people.

231989 2004-04-26 02:18:00 Beetle,if you come to the point that you would like to build your own PC then your welcome to assemble it in my work area and ill oversee your work/progress(provided at least some of the components are sourced through me). metla (154)
231990 2004-04-26 03:32:00 LOL

Thanxs Metla, you have no idea what an earbashing of questions you will let yourself in for if i ever take up the offer.......

may do that one day.

no rush at the moment....... by then i may have done the geek bit and had enough of these things to last a life time and some......

and be on to my next project.......goodness knows what. :p
may be learning to fly, or make witch's brew passed down from mum....:D

231991 2004-04-26 07:37:00 Comon, Beetle! What's so hard about it? I'm sure given a box of bits, you could make something that works?
Maybe that could be the next press F1 team challenge!?!!
Seriously though, there are quite a few internet sites that give really good instruction about how to build a computer. Or even the local library.
*it is still there, right?*

231992 2004-04-26 07:54:00 Um I thought that was the idea behind this thread????

the what can be so hard about it? and then the enormous amount of threads relating to ive done this what can be wrong????
my new comp wont etc...... why???
im not ready for that yet.......

might not ever be, but with a very patient helper.... i might just get it sussed.

not that we dont love helping others, but sometimes the monitony ? of the threads does get a little wan........

no offense to all PF1 people, past present future.

so breath easy folks not this year at this rate.

231993 2004-04-26 08:08:00 Perhaps we need to define the meaning of "building a computer" here?

When I built my first PC, everything had to be built by hand. The components were purchased as individual resistors, capacitors, Integrated Circuits, transistors etc.

Starting with a blank (hand designed) printed circuit board and a soldering iron. I took weeks, then weeks more to fault find at component level. Required lots of test gear. Money. Time. And above all knowledge of how it all was actually meant to work, at electronic theory level. (it was a 2 MHz Z80 with 48k of RAM by the way).

To be able to understand the electronic processes required many prior years of study, exams and more study however. Being able to look at a circuit diagram and understand the digital logic processes was a must. You couldn't just buy a card to drive a printer, there wasn't any made let alone sold as generic cards, so you made one to drive whatever you were using as a printer (an old Teletype telegram machine).

Nowdays you are not actually building a computer. You are just plugging pre-built modules together. Just like making a sandwich, where someone else has already created the bread and fillings, ready for you to assemble according to the menu selected by you.

All you need now is lots of common sense and logical thought processes, however as pointed out by metla, those attributes are not always applied as diligently as they should be to the "simple" assembly process.

And beetle, you would have no problem, you do posess the required attributes I am sure. A good strong cup of coffee and you will be fine.

:p

nup i dont think im ready..... :D

if ever.

231995 2004-04-26 08:23:00 Whats wrong with Intel? i have and never would use a AMD (well unless i was given a machine for free). All of the 6 computers ive had since 2000 have used Intel chips dwnz2003 (5250)
231996 2004-04-26 08:26:00 I say go for it, but do your homework first. Before something goes wrong.

Ideally get someone to help you (in person!) the first time.
