231954 2004-04-25 06:02:00 I am "still" hunting for the best laptop deal!!! Getting frustrated with all the options and things to consider.

Does anyone know anything about the following model laptop:

SOny Vaio FX-505
Specs:
PIII, 900MHz, 384 Meg, 15Gb, DVD-R / CDRW.
$950 NZD

I want a laptop that is capable of emailing photos really, and general wordprocessing. Would be a bonus if the above model is capable of this 'comfortably' as well as handling powerpoint presentations.

Out of curiosity, possibly a dumb question, but excuse my lack of knowledge in this field!!! I assume a P3 900MHz is faster than or close to a P4 1.6GHz 400MHz???? How is the MHz significant or what is the purpose of this?

Would it be easy enough or even possible to upgrade this model to 40Gb and 512MB?

Really appreciate your expertise guys!!!!

Cheers :-)

231955 2004-04-25 06:42:00 Hi there

That system would handle emailing, word processing easily. You may have issues playing games that need power or running graphics programs.

As far as processor speeds go, the p4 1.6GHz runs at 1600MHz (1000 Mhz to a GHz), so it is faster than the p3 900MHz.

I understand that the second MHz figure (400MHz in the example), is the speed that the components on the motherboard run at - the Front Side Bus (FSB). This can be figures like 133, 266, 333, 400 or 800 - on AMD systems the figure is doubled (eg 400 MHz = 800 MHz).

The FSB of older systems (ie the P3), wasn't advertised as much as they are now - another selling point I guess these days.

231956 2004-04-25 06:42:00 1.6 GHz = 1,600 MHz. The 400 MHz is just the BUS speed, so a 1.6 GHz laptop is nearly twice the speed of a 900 MHz one.

And a P4 is the successor to the P3, which is now "obsolete"

RAM is sometimes limited as to the amount you can fit, not all older ones will take 512 MHz. As an example a Toshiba 1730, 600 MHz will only take 192 MB of RAM maximum.

HDD can usually be upgraded but they are quite expensive for laptops.

231958 2004-04-25 06:50:00 Hi Charlize,

Looking at the specs for the Sony it would be possible to upgrade the RAM to 512MB, but as it already has 384MB this would mean that it contains 128MB and 256MB sticks of RAM. You would have to buy a 256MB stick and replace the 128MB stick as it will only have two memory slots. :(

The PIII is rated at 900Mhz and would be less powerful than the PIV 1600Mhz computer. The PIV, if it is a new computer, is possibly using Intel's new M processor which gives you better battery life.

Apart from that that the Sony would be more than capable of handling e-mail, word processing and powerpoint.

HTH :)

231959 2004-04-25 22:19:00 Thanks all for your advice :-)

Any idea what I should pay for this Laptop (Sony Vaio FX-505), considering that it's 2nd-hand, and an older model, need to be sure I'm not going to pay too much for it. Thanks :-)
