232654 2004-04-28 03:40:00 Hi
Can anybody advise me- I corrupted the set up files in my C drive XP when I tried to repair a file - went too far on( missed the repair option), and panicked- rebooted-- result impossible to install or delete.I must have irrevocably corrupted the set up files.

I then installed XP in my original 4 gb h/d which had contained W 98 SE- this then allowed me to see and copy all the essentail details from the non usuable original XP on the 14.3 gb h/d prior to formatting it and re installing XP in full on it.

Having made one almighty cockup I started to install the XP in what is showing as D drive- I was even given the option of choosing which letter drive I wanted.--- but as I got further in - it talked about installing in C drive-not C which I do not want.

I got so far in then as usual, panicked in case I goofed again.:-(

Question - if I had carried on, would I have then formatted the D whilst not touching the C drive, or would the comment that it was installing on "C" drive have lost all my hard saved copies in the now C drive now in use

I merely want to install XP on the larger h/d and make it the master and the present 4 gb the slave

The presumption here is that the partitions or logical drives are formatted FAT32 .

What are the drives configured as? Ensure you are clear which drive is the master and which is the slave .
Also, research how partitions on drives are recognised by BIOS and in what order .

How are the drives partitioned? Ensure you are clear whether the partitions are primary partitions or logical drives .

Possibly depending on how the drives are configured - master/slave - and how each drive is partitioned and formated and the type of installation .

Plan .
Configure the drives in a master-slave relationship .
Ensure critical data is backed up .
Plan the drive partitioning .

232656 2004-04-28 05:04:00 Hi Merlin,
Yes the W 98 was Fat 32- but I point out that that has been wiped in favour of NTFS- it is now quite compatible - is the master( for now) and has all of my saved files re installed- in fact it is going to be the slave after this debacle is sorted.
What I wanted was to format and install XP - also in the same as above after the format and have the larger h/d eventually as the master
The question is,---- can I do this alongside -if you like- of the C drive without affecting anything in the said C drive.
It is now called D drive - but cannot be used until I replace the corrupted set up files in the installation, that I goofed off on.
OR does it even need the setting up/install/ repair at all ?

232657 2004-04-28 05:47:00 If you have saved your data to the 4GB drive effie, then why not disconnect it and do an install on the only drive the OS will see, your original C: drive.

You could also have re-installed XP over the top of your corrupted version which would have left your settings and data intact.

Cheers

232658 2004-04-28 06:54:00 Best way around this sort of thing, is to use Partition Magic and label/name the partitions so you know what you are dealing with.

Then always use partition magic to make a specific windows partition, otherwise who knows what windows will do.

Backup your data and start again.

232659 2004-04-28 06:58:00 Hi Billy T -- I wish you were right - one of my onetime school boy tutors- now a grown man with a computer degree- went round and around just as I had been doing before I called for help- he tried manually ( old style of setting up- he tried to get the puta to read the XP cd as I had done- all ended up with a larger than usual cursor and nothing on this earth would let it go further- I had visions of losing years of info - but by installing the onetime 98 h/d I was and did save everything-:-)
Anyway you have hit the nail on the head- I am going to pull the smaller h/d off and install- wish me lick-- and do I need that !!! I have panicked enough of late
Thank you all
