232631 2004-04-28 01:59:00 The Microsoft 'Works 2000" discs (containing Encarta Encyclopaedia, spreadsheets, Money 2000), etc. that were pre-installed in our old computer (Windows 98SE) will not install in our new XP.
I have tried the XP program compatibilty with different settings but the following error messages appear;
PFiles\MSWorks\split.avi.
PFiles\MSWorks\wkmerge.dll
PFiles\MSWorks\wksss.exe
Also XP will not accept/install Expert Software/Championship Chess: Error message: MFCAN 532.dll
Hoping someone can help.

232632 2004-04-28 02:15:00 Welcome to PF1 Olderfix. Hope your visit is rewarding!

Is that the full extent of the error messages?

"PFiles\MSWorks\wkmerge.dll" is a cryptic message, any chance of the whole message if there is more? e.g. does it say it cannot find the files, or what?

We need the exact spelling and syntax of the errors to provide meaningful help.

If it really is "PFiles" as the directory, that indicates a non standard installation. Otherwise it would be "Program Files"?

Likewise the MFCAN 532.dll, is there really a space between the MFCAN and 532? It changes the possible options, as it becomes an unknown file.
MFCAN532.dll appears to be related to a scanner driver. MFCAN<space> 532.dll is unknown.

232633 2004-04-28 02:46:00 OEM version by any chance? metla (154)
232634 2004-04-28 05:10:00 Yes the 'Works 2000' are authentic discs from Microsoft (pre installed in our old computer) - I assume that is what you mean by OEM. But the Championship Chess is Expert Software. Oldferix (5581)
232635 2004-04-28 05:20:00 Thanks for your reply Godfather.
I'm not too sure what I'm doing as I'm new toall this Forum stuff. I hope that you receive the following information;
Re.PFiles\MSWorks\wkmerge.dll" is a cryptic message, any chance of the whole message if there is more? e.g. does it say it cannot find the files, or what?
One of the messages that I receive (they are different - according to how I go about installing the program is: Error 1305 - Error reading from file, D.\PFiles\MSWorks\wksss.exe. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
Re. The Expert Chess problem: The message I receive is: This application has failed to start because MFCAN532.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem.
It all seems a bit messy. Can you help?

232636 2004-04-28 05:22:00 If they are OEM then that means they are only supposed to be used on the PC they were sold with.
The problems you are having may be caused by a technological measure to stop them being used on another PC but I'm not sure. Someone else will be able to confirm that.
The chess program just may not work on your operating system. I've struck that on more than one occasion. Do a google search on the chess program and you may find some mention of any problems.

232637 2004-04-28 06:08:00 "Error 1305 - Error reading from file"
Clean the CD. This error is often simple that the CD is dirty, wash it in warm saopy water and dry it with a lint free cloth.

Check the CD for scratches, as thats another possibility.

While they are OEM CDs and only supposed to be used on the original CD, they are unlikely to be "keyed" to it and should install on another.

232638 2004-04-28 06:10:00 Thanks for your help Oggy, I'd never heard of OEM before so I'm sure that your reply will help.
As an Ex Wellingtonian now living in Hawkes Bay I can understand what you have to put up with in 'Red & Black' land. Give 'em hell!

232639 2004-04-28 06:11:00 Please look again at the MFCAN523.dll message

Is it by any remote chance MFCANS32.dll? ("S", not "5" ??)
