232578 2004-04-28 00:20:00 Hi people,

Just some questions about Wireless and ADSL.

I’ve shifted house and sooner or later will have to network my Pc’s again. I haven't yet drilled any holes in the floor to run my cables under, because I’m expanding my options. Either opt to spend the effort crawling under the house and wiring everything up, or spend the money to go to wireless. And yet the price for my dialup connection is roughly $15 less than as for Jetstream as to explain why I’m still unsure yet?

I do not have a ADSL modem yet. Still using dialup.

This is where wireless comes in...

Question: Do I need to have an ADSL modem before going wireless?

And if I do, then can I still connect to the internet without using a Jetstream Plan?

Secondly, if I move to Jetstream, it is a requirement that I need filters. Does this mean filters for each computer? If so, how does one go about doing this with only one line installed?
I've already got a double adapter one for my phone and internet, and If I need a filter for each machine, where the heck am I going to put it, as there is only one phone jack point in the house.

Could this mean....

If I don’t have a ADSL modem, then I cannot go wireless…
If I don’t have wireless cards for each computer, I still cannot connect to the internet…
If I don’t have wireless access point, then all the above is useless, unless I have one…
If I cannot connect to the internet using my ADSL modem unless I am on a Jetstream plan, then all the above means nothing…

So overall, I need to spend 700.00 up to go wireless:

ADSL Modem $240
Wireless access point $340
Wireless access cards $138 ($69 for each computer)
Jetstream plan $39.95
Jetstream Connection $99

Total cost approx: 856.95

232579 2004-04-28 00:38:00 The Filters go on any lines where a phone will be used. You don't filter the line going into the computer. You can get a splitter plug that has a filtered phone jack and unfiltered plug you plug the modem cable into.

You would need a Jetstream account with an ISP to access the internet. You should be able to get a router for cheaper than $240. I recommend the USRobotics SureConnect 9100 which has a $50 rebate at the moment.

You would need a wireless card in each PC. An access point is used as a booster, and you don't necessarily need it, although if you are using more than 2 pc's it may be a good idea.

The connection is free (www.telecom.co.nz) until 16 May. ;-)

232581 2004-04-28 01:50:00 Filters seem to confuse people. I was unsure myself about them, they sounded technical, having to 'install' each one.

Well, all you do is plug them into any sockets in your home that you also use a telephone on.

Here are two pics of the filter at home. The close up pic is a bit blurry, as I was trying to hold it steady and take a pic at the same time!

232583 2004-04-28 23:03:00 Thanks people for your respones . . .

Thanks for the pictures there Jester!

It must obviously mean that I need to have more than one phone jack in the house . I don't know I am going to do that with my only one jack point because I have 3 comps to network with .

What I am still curious about though . . . . (reiterating)

>Can I still connect to the internet without using a Jetstream Plan?

Say if I bought an ADSL tommorrow for instance; can I still continue to work online with my current plan?

Thanks .

232584 2004-04-29 00:41:00 I have no knowledge of how wireless routers work but the non-wireless ADSL router I use allowed my computers to be networked prior to the connection of Jetstream . This meant that I could still use my dialup modem while waiting for my Jetstream to be enabled and have the computers networked via the ADSL router .

Now that I am on Jetstream the dialup modem is unplugged and idle though I could use it if I wished - I would just disconnect from ADSL and use it .

No, you only need one telephone jack if you have a router that you can plug all the computers into in order to share the Jetstream connection . The router is plugged into the telephone jack along with your telephone, both via the filter that Jester has shown . By that I mean you plug the filter into the telephone jack then plug your router and telephone into the filter adaptor .

Hope that explains things a bit better . If not just ask . ;-)

232585 2004-04-29 21:50:00 You'll be fine with only one phone jack . You can buy filters that have two connections, like a normal phone splitter .

One jack is for the phone which is filtered, one jack is for the modem which is unfiltered .

232586 2004-04-29 23:08:00 Just a note that if you have a monitored alarm then you will need a full installation of $250 (less $99 b4 their promotion runs out) where a technician needs to do some wiring. In this case you dont need filters. parry (27)

You only need to buy the adaptor filter if the ADSL modem doesn't come with one. AFAIK the Dynalink router modems include one. Single filters go on the phone jacks for extra telephones around the house. ;-)
