232590 2004-04-28 00:07:00 Im not too sure how good the Mandrake Partitioner is, Ive not had a very good run with it, but I can partially blame that on the HDD's I was using...

Anyways, when I last installed Mandrake 9.0, the Installer would let you resize partitions :-) Im not too sure about Ntfs however...

I use Knoppix, and QtParted is on that which will let you do just that :-)

232591 2004-04-28 02:16:00 The partition tool in Mandrake 10 (and 9.2) is great and can resize NTFS, what you need to do first would be to partition your current drive from within windows (you could use Partition Magic for this although there are a number of free ones about). Restart your computer and boot off the Mandrake disc and your away laughing, choose the correct partition, choose LILO or GRUB as the bootloader, thats about it.

I would also recommend creating a small FAT32 partition so that files can be shared between the 2 OS's, also using Firebird as your email program would be a good idea as you can share the mail box between the two OS's.

There's plenty on the web about this kind of thing so do a bit more research and you'll be sweet as :)

That's good to know :-)

I agree with creating a small FAT32 partition, unless Mandrake 10 is based on the 2.6 kernel which has write support for NTFS. Using Thunderbird and Firefox is a great idea too :-)

I'd recommend you use GrUB for the Boot Loader

I have ask a WAY and the METHOD of partition not RECOMMENDATION.
Any web site link directly would be helpful.

(sorry to put so bluntly here, but i just need some real help, not "use XX, google it yourself"...

Thanks

Be very careful claiming it can resize a NTFS partition as many OSS resizing tools will not resize an NTFS partition under some circumstances, i.e. heavy fragmentation or use of encrypted volumes.
In saying that many free windows based resizing tools suffer the same problems as they have just ported the OSS code across.

Using the disk management tools in windows or the likes of partition magic will do it under all conditions, all thou no guarantees.

232597 2004-04-28 03:10:00 Okay . . and answer:

Defrag your HDD first, and run ScanDisk on it .

Boot from the CD-Rom to begin installation

The Mandrake Partitioner that is part of the installer will assist you to resize it :-)

232598 2004-04-28 03:19:00 Not to put you off or sound to critical but if you are not confidant enough too do it yourself then DON'T as you could send all your data into the great void...

Get someone to do it for you while you watch as trying to give you step by steps on a mailing list is a bit painful and it will mean you using software that the person guiding you knows inside out and can anticipate any problems.
