| 232457 | 2004-04-27 08:02:00 | I've finally come to the stage where i can say i have enough to purchase a DVD writer..well i think so...i've got $500 for a dvd writer purchase, but i can wait another 2-3 weeks if more funds r required.. But now the question is...what dvd writer is best? as I've got to go external due to the fact i have a laptop.. I want it to have as many options possible like dvd-rw and dvd-r etc etc and I'm located in Rotorua but i can do national stores if they have online stores :) I would love to hear recommendations :) Chris |

| 232460 | 2004-04-27 10:40:00 | the sony brand of DVD writers I've personally found to be awesome, but not always the cheapest. This one is like the 510a internall... but IMO hold in high regard. www.ascent.co.nz the drive is multi standard... so then it depends on the media vs cost you buy. please note ( as listed on the website ) it does not support 9x or less and is usb 2 compliant... should run fine on usb 1 etc but at slower burn rates. :) |

| 232461 | 2004-04-27 10:41:00 | People who have a DVD writer, usually just have 1 DVD writer, so its not possible to most to say if that one is the best. How can they compare it? I suggest that you search computer magazine sites to see if any have done tests, but if you need an external drive, just how much choice have you really got? Not much I would imagine. Most of your possible problems would come from the USB interface. Is your laptop USB 2.0 ? Not sure it will be, its somewhat similar to mine from memory and I know mine is only USB 1.1 Will any external DVD writer drive work correctly with USB 1.1 if thats what you have? Check this out first. |

I've installed other drives at their request because of price or prefrence based on their previous hardware history ( and in some cases what they like the "look" of ) and then have to change it because the "client" didn't like the result. :) |
