Even running Defrag will not help, as the problem is that the win2k version of defrag will not re-organize the data into a single continuos block, it will leave blocks scattered all over the partition and that is the problem...
I do not know if the XP version of defrag is any better.

232602 2004-04-28 03:34:00 my real problem, once i have boot into the CD of the Mandrake, they have present me with a poor UI of parition method - (ie, during that step, i don't know which button is which) robert_m_r_w (3943)
232603 2004-04-28 03:39:00 In that case, its probably best to ask somebody to assist you.

Either that, or Ive used Knoppix many times with easy and so have many people I know.

You use an app called qtparted.... But this may just be confusing the matter.

232604 2004-04-28 06:14:00 FIRST SECOND AND THIRD: This is a laptop . Linux has problems with many laptops . People have documented what works, and what doesn't .
Save yourself a lot of problems by reading their work . ;-)

Google with "ibm t40 linux" . Browse through some of the links you get . The first one, and the one titled "Linux/VMWare on IBM T40" look very helpful . There're references to a page by Klaus Weidner . . . look at that you'll find links . There are suggested BIOS settings .

It's suggested that it's a a good idea to use a Knoppix disk to do the disk splitting .

(I found the easiest way to configure the X-window server on my Winbook laptop was to copy the config file that Knoppix produced and use that for my RH9 system) .

232605 2004-04-28 06:28:00 I totally agree :-) Well said...

However you did sound a little pessimistic...
Understandably so, but Linux laptop support is acceptable enough for most people :-) I simply couldnt use the inbuilt Webcam on my laptop, otherwise it worked fine out of the box :-)

I agree about reading what others have written.. It saves much frustration and loss of hair!

;-)

232606 2004-04-28 06:41:00 I wasn't being pessimistic .

The T40 looks to be quite good (as I'd expect from IBM with their support for Linux) , and popular enough that people are working on the problems (like power management) . But IBM Linux support is mostly for desktop and power computing . IBM laptops are still laptops .

Some laptops are effectively paperweights as Linux boxes . The situation should improve, but many laptops have been indeed "Designed for Microsoft Windows xxx" . Laptop hardware is special . Linux relies on commodity hardware . Anything else needs a lot of work . And it won't get it unless it's popular . ;-)

232607 2004-04-28 07:56:00 The version of Partition Magic I use is number 8. It costs a wee bit but is damn good at it's job. In regards to answering your question about installing Mandrake 10 it would be easier if you did a bit of reading first in particular at: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/ the guys here are helpful and they have covered all the bases in regards to installing dual boot systems and problems in general with Linux.

Hope that helps some.

232608 2004-04-28 23:18:00 Yes Graham, you're too right... :-)

Take my laptop for example:
I cant use the inbuilt webcam sadly :-(

Its a small trade-off though ;-)
