232353 2004-04-27 08:10:00 Snippet from Woosh website FAQ.

"Our current policy is to review the usage of customers who use around 10 times the median usage (current median 700MB p/month)."

Well I don't use around 10x the median, I use about 28x the median. I think I'm pretty safe. :D

232354 2004-04-27 19:56:00 Interesting. That's the sort of thing I keep hearing (except for the regular performance drops).
It feels like they don't quite have a "total solution" and too much is left to the customer to sort out. Being flippant about how they rejig their network is not going to attract lots of people.
I am not happy with my ISP, but the problem is that Woosh just don't seem to be a realistic alternatice (and if Nimit T from Woosh rings me again about changing to them, I am going to start fantasizing about rituals that will make his voice squeak).

232355 2004-04-27 20:31:00 Home Networking is a beast dangit
Ive given up for now getting anything other than ICS working
Although Im happy to say that Ive never "noticed" any creative speed capping, it could go unnoticed as I share the connection. Currently Im getting full (or at least near full throughput)
Only had the Woosh service a month now & Ive recieved my call re: usage... <sigh>

232356 2004-04-27 21:48:00 My experience with Woosh:

I signed up when it launched last year, and found it very easy to set-up on my laptop via the USB connection. I have thought about connecting it to a wireless router, but I've resisted based on trouble other have had. There are problems with the USB connection, when it drops out, I have to unplug, reset, reconfigure, turn off and talk very nicely to my laptop and Woosh modem to get it working again.

At the time I was living in an apartment on Queen St, and the reception was ok, i.e. 2-3 lights on the modem. Despite this "ok" reception, the connection kept dropping out (once or twice every half an hour) and at times I was getting worse speed than dial-up.

I'm now connecting from Eden Tce, and the reception is 4 lights on the modem, the maximum. Despite the 4 lights showing, when I move the cursor over the connection box, it states that my signal strength is about 25 - 30%. I don't know what this means?

My connection drops out less often now, once every 2 days, and the speed does vary from dial-up to about 300kbs. Despite what Woosh say on their web-site, my experience is that the connection is effected by bad weather (not looking forward to an Auckland winter) and if it's really windy and raining I can't connect at all.

Given the problems with connecting, connection speed, USB issues, no support for XBOX or PS2 online or Online Gaming - and the lower pricing for new customers (54.95 with no "reasonable usage" clause) I’m looking at going back to ADSL...

These opinions are from my personal experience, but others may be happy with their offerings? I would not recommend Woosh to anybody at this stage.

232357 2004-05-02 07:55:00 I live in the CBD myself and have had woosh since they launched. I have had the phone call once but often d/l over their limit. I don;t have any problem finding signal where I live but when i go to work its not so good and drops occasionally.

I think the % refers to the difference between RX and TX. If this is low then the connection will drop often.

232358 2004-05-04 11:45:00 Well... I think all that customer complaining must have done something...

Got a letter in the mail today saying my plan has been changed to $54.95 a month!

Takes effect 5 May 2004, and on the next bill it will be $54.95 plus a $10 credit for the month of May.

Also I'll quote from the letter:
...there's absolutely no catch! You'll still enjoy super-fast wireless broadband, unlimited downloads and a service..."

Unlimited downloads eh. :) I think I'll keep this letter for future reference...

But anyway, seeing I'm on the Everyday plan, I still must have to conform to the conditions right? Which means they can still moan at me for going over 7gb? Even though they kinda just sent me false advertising in the mail today?

232359 2004-05-05 06:16:00 I currently use my internet connection for Voice over IP (via MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger) and have jetstart.

One gripe that some Woosh users have seems to be the "lag". I wonder if anyone has tried VOIP using Woosh and what are their comments on it.

Cheers

232360 2004-05-13 07:39:00 Could i get a copy of this letter for 'reference' sake ? :D Will Hunt (3655)
232361 2004-05-14 07:52:00 Wow - I feel lucky!
Mind you, I've just returned from the wilds of Birkenhead, and the Woosh speeds after a couple of months of dial-up are a boon to this old codger.
Had no difficulty setting it up, been over the cap a couple of times without a bluey (yet) and haven't had problems with bad weather yet. I must cofess that when the neighbour plonked a bus outside the window things went a bit tired, but still over 100 k. I use an external antenna, which seems to have been a magic pill. At the moment, the spouting is overflowing, so the signal passes through a waterfall and still comes out squeaky clean. (Sorry) I must be drinking the preferred brand of beer or something, but I'm pretty content with the behaviour (in Windows anyway) Getting it to run in Linux is a different story altogether, but I suspect it is just a loose nut on the keyboard.
Cheers
