232404 2004-04-27 08:36:00 Hi All. In a few weeks time we will be moving house, still in Wanganui tho. I know this topic has come up many times before, but now it is ME asking. We will be then moving to Jetstream.
The Telecom Jetstream meter has been reported as 'Running Fast", clocking up more usage than is actual. Is this So?? I assume the excess mb's are charged for from their meter (naturally!!). So would it be wise to install, on our computer, an independent usage meter to check on this? If this should prove different to Telecom metre, what can one do about it??

Any reccomendations????. We will probably start with the $39.95 plan & work up if we need to. Is that the way to go. Given my "ineptitude" with computers it is most likely we will have to do the "Telecom Install", also for more phone jacks (I cannot crawl around the roof space anymore.)
Why Telecom???. Well I have been with them since it was NZ P&T, way back when. They have always been OK with me.
Thanks in advnce, PJ :D

232405 2004-04-27 08:58:00 well the usage meter actually either has been corrected or it has corrected it self or it like me.

Althought the usage seems i cannot possibly verify the information is correct,as i have a router, and a proxyserver, but not all the traffic goes through the proxy, as i have it there to make pages load quicker from cache.

232408 2004-04-27 09:29:00 Jester, thanks for that.
Out of curiosity I had a look at our usage on the 56modem site on Telecom Account. From April 7 to April 26 we clocked up 57:07:07 (Hours?). Does this relate in any way to Jetstream usage? Or am I comparing apples to oranges?? PJ

232409 2004-04-27 09:40:00 Jetstream usage is measured/charged in data transferred to and from your computer, while dial up is measured/charged based on the length of time (in hours) that you spend on-line.

You may be able to see, on the site you went to, how much data you sent and received on dial up, which may give you some indication of how much you use, however, being connected all the time and with faster access (Jetstream) you will do more and more online so I wouldn't take your current usage too much into account.

So, yes, you have apples and oranges all in the same cart there PJ ;) All you need is some pears and peaches and you have a fruit salad.

232410 2004-04-27 10:03:00 Ok another Q. To "Work" on the computer one does not have to be connected to the internet, so the Modem is de-activated. No usage.
If one is on Jetstream connected all the time, & even if not actually "talking" to the internet, is usage being clocked up? If so wouldn't one disconnect?? PJ

No worries PJ, I am always on (except when the computer is off) and apart from automatic updates for Nortons the only downloads are the ones I ask for. I have no problem staying under my 1GB cap with three computers on line every day. I stayed under 500MB until I updated the other two boxes and they started downloading updates!

Cheers

232412 2004-04-27 12:22:00 It depends whether you use a router or internal adsl modem to connect. While my PCs are off at night (generally), the router is "always on", waiting for the PCs to be switched on. AFAIK nothing transmits or receives during this period (well I haven't noticed the lights on the router flashing).

At the moment the main computer has a Lucent internal 56 modem. The other computer on the network has NO modem. What happens to the 56 modem when on ADSL?
So, two computers networked.
We thought of using a DSE ADSL 4 port router, it appears to be only USB1.1 tho. Then either plug both computers into this OR plug the main computer into the router & leave the network as it is. YES or NO?? PJ
