232841 2004-04-29 02:47:00 Hey guys... just a query here.

When exactly did our online language change to incorporate 'words' like g33k, l33t, 3l33t, haxx0r, n00b, r0xx0r and über?

And who started it?

As far back as I can remember these words are when I first entered the direct connect network, october last year.

232842 2004-04-29 03:02:00 It has not been and never will be incorporated in my online language. B-) Graham L (2)

232847 2004-04-29 05:13:00 leet speak or 1337 speak or 1337 5p34|< (it has varying levels of... there's no way to put it nicely) has been around for some time.. there's plenty of information about it within reach of a simple google search

I like the comments here:

most notably:
"On the scale of linguistic complexity, basic leet is about on a par with pig Latin,"

There are two major schools of thought here, one is related to everquest and I forget what the story there is, and the other story is that it's related to the old old days of cracking when everything was unix, upon gaining root access the successful cracker would yell in celebration "root!" or type into IRC/BBS "r00t!" Mix that with the early 90's (waaaahooooo) and you get w00t

TMYK ;)

232849 2004-04-29 05:24:00 oh for post editing...

btw, über is german, it loosely translates out to "super" or "above" (super means "above" if you were not aware; a boat's superstructure is the structure "above" water, superman has abilities "above" that of a normal man etc) so there is technically nothing wrong with its usage in online language, as you may have noticed - english uses a lot of words from different languages, latin and german included ;)
