233166 2004-04-30 10:58:00 During last weekend I managed to spill half a bottle of Speights on my Laptop, an HP ZE 4231, and it threw in the towel. Have just got a qoute back from Compaq Care, they want to replace the motherboard and the touchpad, at a price of $1200. Has anyone had experience with this type of repair before? Is this a resonable price for a new motherboard/touchpad?
Any information will be much appreciated, thanks Bing.

233167 2004-04-30 11:08:00 i can't give prices for it but compaq parts are not cheap and laptops are generally very expensive. i have a laptop here and the keyboard is well over $100. plus that laptops are not very easy to pull apart and put back together so i'm not surprised at the repair bill. tweak'e (174)

233173 2004-04-30 12:53:00 If there is a valid contents policy in force, then cover may be limited to a certain dollar value (some policies term laptops as 'valuables' or impose this limit due to the inherent risk that an expensive piece of potable electronic equipment poses), or the basis of settlement may be limited to the indemnity (fair price market/secondhand value).

As you have established that it is repairable, then the basis of settlement would be the lower of the repair cost (ie $1,200) or any figures mentioned earlier (ie policy limit or indemnity value).

Insurance companies wouldn't replace at a higher cost if they can repair for less.
