233230 2004-05-01 00:53:00 Issue 1.

I have a DVD drive that usually works well. But occasionally I put in a disk (happens most often on magazine cover CDs) and it spins up and keeps spinning but I can't access the disk. If I try to eject (either using my computer and right-clicking then eject, or pressing the drive's eject button) nothing happens, the disk just keeps spinning. To access the disk, or eject it, I have to restart my PC. Putting the same disk into my CD burner I have no problem.

I thought it was just my drive getting old, so I ignored it, until I found out that the DVD combo drive my dad bought last week does exactly the same thing (and most often with magazine cover disks ?:|). That said, he's returning his drive for exchange, but mine's a bit too old for that now.

Issue 2.

This happens on both my DVD drive and one of my DVD players. I push eject, the drive opens then closes straight away. Sometimes I go through this 20 or so times before it stays open long enough for me to get a disk in or out. Sometimes when it closes and there's a disk in there, it doesn't see it at all (on both the drive and the player).

Any suggestions on either issue?

Cheers,

Mike.

233232 2004-05-08 03:08:00 often i find magizine cds expecially with fancy start screens can be problematic to auto run. some cd drives can hog the system and on top of that if it fires up a cpu intencive startup ap then the pc can just freeze.

turning off auto start usualy helps.

233233 2004-05-08 04:24:00 Well, you must remember that those magazine discs are "free" and they are manufactured very cheaply.

I have 3 CD drives on this computer, and my CD-RW is the best at reading most CD's. My DVD drive is good too, but sometimes it will hit a disc it can't read, that the other drives can....

umm, that problem is generally associated with holding the eject button down too long. i find that some of the new DVD players out there can be terrible with this problem. you have to press then release the button very quickly, but some will tolerate it if you're a few miliseconds out....

Maybe I should rephrase what I said :) It happens all sorts of different CDs, including (and most often) magazine cover CDs

:D

That's not the case - especially with my DVD drive.
