233562 2004-05-02 03:04:00 Hi all, my godsons grandfathers writer is having a few probs. Basically what i need to know is can the writer die and the cdrom still work? I imagine it is highly likely this is possible? He uses "Nero" and when he tries to burn/copy a cd it doesn't recognise when the cd is in - so nothing happens after it prompts you to put the original medium in (the disc you want to copy). The discs are ones they have previously copied with no problems on the same writer too. I tried uninstalling "Nero" and reinstalling it, however it doesn't appear to have helped. Unfortunately i haven't got the writer specs with me at the moment sorry, but its easy a year old now i believe. Does anybody have any ideas on anything else i can try? I was thinking perhaps a way to test the burner is working would be to try burning using xp's burner, so i guess i will try that, would that mean the writer is dead if it can't write in xps burner? Also it appears to still read cd's o.k, thats the other reason why i wondered if the writer part can die independently of the cdrom.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Also i haven't had a chance to test burning files individually (not doing a cd copy), so i guess that would be a good idea to try when i get back around there too.

233563 2004-05-02 06:06:00 The write operation can die while the CD read is still ok. I had one that appeared to do this but, was fixed by a firmware upgrade.

There are some utilities you can download for Nero which test/display speed, read/write capabilities, driver and firmware versions, media capabilities, etc. Might give a usefull pointer to whats happening. Check out the Nero website or do a google.

233564 2004-05-03 02:31:00 Thanks Murray, surprisingly enough i hadn't even thought to check Nero yet:8}, so thanks for that pointer. I was thinking that cleaning out all the registry entries for Nero would be my next stop, however I found a couple of tools to download straight away from Nero that will clean the registry etc... so thats a bonus, hopefully it may help pinpoint the prob.

Cheers
