233566 2004-05-02 02:26:00 Your dial up modem uses the phone line in the same way as a telephone call. When you are connected using your modem your line is in use (engaged).

Whilst you may be able to switch calls using call waiting when talking on the phone and another call comes in, you can't swap from the modem to a phone call without ending the modem connection.

If you do have call waiting, sometimes the beeps on the line will interfere and disconnect the modem unless you disable the call waiting beeps before dialling your ISP. There are products out there that will alert you to the fact that a phone call is coming in, and you can then disconnect from the internet and answer the phone, too.

BUT as stated earlier, as far as I am aware, you can't leave the modem connection active and speak on the phone at the same time.

The new V.92 56k modem spec allows for one to put the 'internet' on hold so to speak. However, your ISP has to support this protocol and you have to have their appropriate software. I suggest you call your ISP and ask if this service is avaiable yet... From memory it isn't but its worth a shot.

As Jester has said your dial up modem uses the phone line and therefore anyone trying to contact you just gets the engaged signal.
Rather than call waiting you can have call diversion, and this way you can have any incoming calls diverted to your mobile. It costs $3.95 per month and each call received costs 48c a minute.
If I receive any calls on the mobile I tell the person that I will get back to them and this keeps the costs down. At least now I dont miss a call.

233570 2004-05-02 04:11:00 If you have call waiting on your phone then dse caller alert XH6837 for $84 is the way to go ( well it works for me ).
I get about 8 seconds to answer the phone and hang up before losing the internet connection. No big deal, redial when you have finished with the phone call.
If you use call diversion make sure you specify "call diversion when busy" .

233571 2004-05-02 06:18:00 ICW (www.actrix.co.nz) available in Wellington and Auckland (and plans for nationwide access underway at present).

Allows you to receive pop-ups advising you when calls are coming in and answer them over the net.
