233992 2004-05-03 12:02:00 Hello,

How do I make a folder the default folder, so that whenever I click into insert a file, or select a file from, it will always open this particular folder.

For example, it currently always opens up the My Documents folder, but I've hardly sourced the file from there. I'd like to set the Photos folder as the default folder that will always open up.

Is this possible (and have I explained myself clearly here?)

thanks,
caffy

233994 2004-05-03 12:23:00 Try looking in the settings for the programme you are using.
Tell us what programme you are using and somebody may give clearer instructions.

233995 2004-05-03 12:36:00 If you are talking about Explorer then try PowerDesk5 as a replacement. mikebartnz (21)
233996 2004-05-03 21:16:00 Using WinXP Pro.

Different programs always open up the My Documents folder, for example firefox (when adding photos to a website), Thunderbird etc.

233997 2004-05-07 00:57:00 I've looked in the settings of MSN Messenger (which is another programme that always opens up My Documents) and there doesnt seem to be any place that you can change this?

Anyone have any ideas what to do?

233998 2004-05-07 01:17:00 Hi . I don't know if this is what you're on about but it is possible specify the default folder in Word or Excel by:

Word - Tools/Options/File Locations/Modify, then navigate to the folder you want to serve as the default Open/Save folder . With your chosen folder in the "Look in" box, click "okay" .

Excel - Tools/Options/General . Type in the folder location at the "Default file location" prompt e . g . D:\Data\My Pictures

It might be possible to do this in other applications but Word and Excel are the only two I have tried it with .

233999 2004-05-07 01:46:00 I have seen details of a work-around and registry hack that will do what you want but it was not a simple task and may end up causing problems further down the road . Because of this I gave up on the idea of doing it myself .

If you are still interested you can find the details somewhere with a search on Google .

234001 2004-05-07 02:17:00 So there is no way of changing how everything opens . Damn .

Thanks anyway .

BTW - johnboy - that tip you gave me, thanks but it did not work . It won't accept the desktop as being a new target location . Oh well .
