233854 2004-05-05 23:57:00 I'll give you that Jester, but cotton buds do work. Used them on taperecorder heads etc for 30 years now. Mind you, the corner of a handkerchief works just as well if you can get into the space. Winston001 (3612)
233855 2004-05-06 00:43:00 I abandoned physical-contact head cleaning years ago. I have found that spray cleaners work very well indeed so use nothing else now. They seem to be able to shift even the most stubborn contamination.

Cheers

233856 2004-05-06 02:51:00 On VCR's the video heads are small fragile components embedded in the cylindrical shiny head drum. There is generally plenty of room around at least one side of the drum, as the tape generally sits in the void space when in the machine.,

To access the heads, rotate the drum around and you will see gaps on both sides between the top and bottom part of the drum. These small gaps contain the heads.

You can quite easily snag these heads with the wrong material.

Heres a pic:

Cassette Tape heads are quite different - they are solid and yep, cotton woool buds are fine :)

233857 2004-05-06 12:52:00 What spray cleaner do u recommend? Will it dissolve the case of my handycam? rads (3082)
233858 2004-05-06 22:23:00 What sort of a job do those head-cleaning tape thingies do? Or, how much might I pay to get a professional seeing-to? (once again the VCR, not me - although there's a thought ;)...) karent (5222)
233859 2004-05-09 22:58:00 I just thought I'd report a satisfactory conclusion to those who participated in this thread. I bought a spray head cleaner, Pudney brand -about $28 - ran it thru for the recommended 20 secs and everything is aok. No squeaks either. Brilliant.
And Billy T, you're a class act. If I wasn't already married...;)

233861 2004-05-10 04:09:00 Rads we thought we would have to buy a new VCR too, after having spent bucks on it.

Mit. Black Diamond E21.

Today Monday 10 May 2004, so our machine shows Monday 12, the year appears to be irelevant.

Which reminds me I had better make a recording for 60 minutes on TV3
.

Cleaning the heads we tape a cottonbud to a Chop Stick and use the alcohol mentioned .

Whoa Billy, settle!! :O

Hmmm, that Pudney stuff sounds good. Might have to give the VCR here a squirt with it sometime to fix up the mess the rental videos have made of it. ;-)

233863 2004-05-10 13:15:00 you must remember that tape recorder heads are usually smaller, less complex and easier to access than VCR heads... agent_24 (4330)
