233977 2004-05-03 11:37:00 Some hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee file/s(over 30 meg) is downloading onto my PC as I surf the internet :(

The icon on the task bar says Downloading Updates

Is this Windows XP Pro self updating?

If so, where is the file being stored on my PC? I can't find the file/s anywhere.

Is this downlading a normal practice?

233978 2004-05-03 11:41:00 have you got auto updating enabled if so yes you are perhaps right beama (111)
233979 2004-05-03 11:43:00 it is likely to be windows updating it self.

as for where the files are going i dont know.

233980 2004-05-03 11:44:00 Take it you are on dial up, this is why a huge file worries you.
If it is not to far through stop it, then use windows update to find out which file it was, then goto your local internet cafe and download it there and get them to burn it onto a disk for you.
You probably wont be able to find the file until it has completely downloaded.

233981 2004-05-03 11:51:00 yep, I'm on a dial-up but that is not a problem, unless of course Ihug 'kick me' as part of their 3 hour policy :)

Guess I will just sit it out - hopefully no harm will be done.

233982 2004-05-03 12:01:00 why not just go do your windows updates, find what you need then either find them on disk (eg pcworld disks) or from mates/internet cafe/techs. tweak'e (174)
233983 2004-05-03 13:29:00 Fair comment :)

I have only just got this new PC up and running and it seems to want to do things differently.

I was just wondering what the large file was - especially as this was the 2nd time in 7 days that it (my PC) decided to download something so huge.

How do I disengage the 'automatic' updates?

233984 2004-05-03 18:23:00 Right click on My Computer
Select Properties
Choose the Automatic Updates tab
Select :prompt before downloading.

233985 2004-05-03 20:12:00 Ring Microsoft and ask for an update CD. This will update your computer to Feb04 and reduce the size of the download to a more acceptable size. Augustus (4490)
233986 2004-05-03 20:54:00 Hi,

I do not recommend ignoring the the XP updates if that is what you are planning to do. Some updates are "critical" and if installed on your computer, can prevent hackers and virus entering your computer.

One good example is an update for the blaster virus that was and still is circulating.

Get the updates on a CD and install them on your computer (especially the critial updates)
