233906	2004-05-03 08:22:00	Hi all . I've download the Linux version (I hope) of Americas Army from Jetsream Games . It has a . run extension although to my inexperienced windows eye it looks like a . bin file . I've done a google and come up with naff all ([ur=http://filext . com/detaillist . php?extdetail=RUN]this for eg[/url]) . There is a definite linux . bin version on the Paradise games site but couldn't get that running at full 290+K that I dowloaded at from JS Games . (40mins for 655MB :) nice) Have I got the right file and if yes, can I just put it in a handy place and point aptget, kapt or synaptic at it or do I do it from the command prompt? 233907	2004-05-03 09:07:00	First you will need to give the file execute permissions. Either right click on it, bring up properties, and put a tick beside execute on the permissions tab. Or at the command line: chmod a+x blahblah.bin It won't work if its on a windows partition. Then all you should need to do is run the file. Double clicking should work. Otherwise, in a terminal do: ./blahblah.bin You will probably need to be root before you run it.	bmason (508)
233908	2004-05-03 09:26:00	Thnanks Brett. So it's a bin file waiting to be made. I'll drag it over to linux now (downlaoded it while working) and give it a try. 233909	2004-05-04 03:28:00	File extensions don't really mean much in *nix except as "hints" . In fact they aren't "extensions" . The dot (" . ") is just another legal character in a filename . A useful command is file . file filename will tell you what just about any file is . It uses magic to decide from the file's contents and structure . ;-) (there is a file called "magic' . . . it's text so you can see what is going on) .	Graham L (2)

I started to get the gist of what you are saying Graham when I ended up reading The Art of Unix Programming while searching for . run, it all seemed to be very reasonable, the 10% I had a faint idea about and the 2% I understood . I think I'll put that tome on the to do list . Linux is happy to display it's guts as it works isn't it, just watching an istallation gives a hint to an ignoramous at whats happeing .
