233893 2004-05-03 04:03:00 I have an 80gb hard drive which, with the updated fdisk, I managed to partition. I then tried to format the partitions but it failed.
After trying other things I deleted the partitions and tried to redo them with fdisk. I now get a failure on the 'Verify disk' which occurs before the partitioning so I can't re-partition it
Also nothing happens when I start a format after partitioning, using the XP setup disk. My hard drive is obviously corrupted somehow..What can I do?....Help! Arjay

233894 2004-05-05 08:23:00 So, you want to install XP onto this 80 GB? Just chuck the cd in, and boot from it (make the cd the bootdisk in BIOS). And save the settings. Chuck
in the CD. It SHOULD be bootable. If you have the CD for XP.

When press a key to boot from CD appears on the screen, press any key
so XP can install. XP will give you the option to format/partition the hdd.

You don't have to use fdisk to format / partition XP. Once you get to the format / setup screen, let it format / whatever. When it reboots again. DON'T press a key, when it says to (as above). It'll start all over again. Just let it continue installing XP onto your hard drive. Once XP has finished installing, change the bootdisk back to C or D / whatever. Save the BIOS settings again. Then boot XP. That's it.

233895 2004-05-05 20:30:00 arjay, what brand is the HDD? Some/most manufactures provide a software proggie that will scan the disk and report problems found.

If it is Maxtor for example, then their Powermax will do the job.

Be careful though, as the series of tests available ranging from a simple scan to see if cable setups etc are OK, go upwards to a total wipe of the HDD, reverting it back to it's origional state. Though you always get the opportunity to back out if the test seems too aggressive to you.

Anyway...Good luck.
