234450 2004-05-05 00:41:00 When my friend starts up her computer it displays an error message which says: Windows Explorer has encountered an error and will now close. 8272807082.TMP This happens every time we try to start the computer. Is there any way we can fix this problem or will we need to format the hard drive and re-install Windows? She is using Windows ME homeschooler04 (5613)
234451 2004-05-05 03:48:00 Have you tried starting in Safe Mode, and then running scandisk or "repair errors" or "thorough scan" even. That'd be the first thing I'd try. HTH:) mark c (247)
234452 2004-05-06 07:27:00 Thank you for that. I will try it as soon as I can get back to my friends house. Any other ideas would be welcome as well in case that doesn't work. homeschooler04 (5613)

While in safe mode delete that file.

234454 2004-05-10 05:35:00 Have run Scandisk and it did not find any errors. Deleted the file listed above but when we restarted Windows it was still there. I tried this twice but the file would not delete. Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. homeschooler04 (5613)
234455 2004-05-10 05:54:00 I would check what's loading at startup.

Find out and post the list here so we can let you know what to remove. Do the following to find the list:
Click Start
Click Run
type:
msconfig
Click on the Autorun tab

Jot down everything that's in there and post back. It may be some application looking for a file which doesnt exist.

Otherwise there's the system file-checker....

234456 2004-05-11 03:49:00 I typed in msconfig but there was no autorun tab.
This is what was ticked under the startup tab:
Taskbar display controls
msnmsgr
ALUAlert
msmc
TVMedia
Scan Registry
Task Monitor
PC Health
System Tray
Load Power Profile
cc App
ccRegVfy
LoadQM
TVMedia (this was listed twice)
ClrSchLoader
CCACHEO
ccEventMgr
EPSON Status Monitor 3 Environment Check
Under the environment tab are:
PATH
Prompt
TMP
TEMP
I tried unchecking TMP and TEMP but that didn't help.
The computer is very slow and takes ages to startup.

234457 2004-05-11 03:58:00 well for starters your infected with spyware so run adaware/spybot and give it a clean out (make sure you get the latest update). see how that goes before doing anymore drastic steps. tweak'e (174)
234458 2004-05-11 06:39:00 I already ran Adaware yesterday and it found 13 items of spyware on there. However it did tell me that 2 of them it could not delete - can't remember what they were now. I won't be able to get over to my friends computer until tomorrow afternoon. Is there anything else I can try? homeschooler04 (5613)
234459 2004-05-11 07:09:00 Try Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 rc3 from:
www.spybot-updates.com

Ive found it sorts out all the spyware that Ad-aware hasnt when clients bring them in. Ad-aware appears to be a lot more well-known and well established, but it doesnt seem to remove it as well as Spybot. YMMV.

Try that first up then get back to us!
It might pay to run it twice, just to confirm its all gone.

Cheers
