234146 2004-05-04 01:35:00 Computer running Windows XP Home, when booting up Norton Internet Security & Firewall is disabled requiring manual activation. Changing the settings option to auto-protect on start up has no effect as next time computer is started, settings are disabled again. Setting password to protect tools options has no effect. Can this be fixed or will I have to reinstall to correct? dadzka (3499)
234147 2004-05-04 06:30:00 You might like to try out the possible solutions given at Symantec Support. This article here (service1.symantec.com) should help. It is for the 2004/2003 version of Norton Internet Security. Jen C (20)
234148 2004-05-04 06:47:00 You may be logging in too fast. I found that if I waited for the scan on the floppy drive to be done then it would work 100% of of the time. However if I did not then sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not.

I also had this problem with Novaback. It has something to do with the order in which the services are starting and the required ones are not loaded in time to be used.

Why don't you just disable the option to scan the floppy drive during bootup and shutdown? How often do you leave floppies in the FDD?

234150 2004-05-04 22:00:00 Thanks for your response & links to articles with possible fixes. I will try these & see how we go. Whilst it is no big deal to manually activate the Internet Security, the point is that for the past 9 or so months it has been booting up correctly with automatic activation and now suddenly it doesn't. Something is obviously not right. Seems to coincide with infection from the dreaded SasserB worm thingy (now fixed). As it is the 2003 version I have and update subscriptions are about to expire so I might kill 2 birds with one stone and get the 2004 version and install rather than deleting & reinstalling the existing version. I can get a good discount thru work & I believe there is a $30 rebate deal so cost not excessive. Thanks again for your help. dadzka (3499)

It had nothing to do with the floppy scan but if I waited until then I knew that all the services would be up. This floppy scan is not the scan from Nortons anyway but one the PC does (and not on bootup from BIOS). They are all off.

Just a matter of timing.

I recently had the same problem for a couple of weeks. Then, during a live-update session a 'huge' file was downloaded which took over 90mins.

After that Nortons has been 'on' each time I fire up the PC.

Try a 'Live update'.

Peter.

234153 2004-05-06 07:24:00 same thing happed to me after re-installing the firewall. i had to uninstall all norton products, use all the removal tools and then it finally worked. liveupdate wouldnt work for me as it wouldnt install anything- just gave errors all day. agent_24 (4330)
234154 2004-05-07 20:59:00 You can also check to see how much is also loading at startup and what it is, I have struck several PC's with the same problem and found that often it was a multitude of programs starting at the same time and Norton just could not get a look in at cranking up so threw a wobbly and just sat there.

If I remember correctly the last one was killed by an internal ADSL modem starting up at the same time. I removed the modem and software and hey presto Norton 2003 and 2004 both worked.

Check your startups also and try eliminating as much as possible, I found most people have more than they require starting up when they turn on their PC.

234155 2004-05-09 21:30:00 Thanks again for the input. Have deleted the programme, saving my settings in the process, and reinstalled. Hey Presto - all is well and Internet Security & Anti Virus start up on boot, as required. Will keep an eye on situation to see if it happens again. Cheers dadzka (3499)
