Telecom is doing them a favour.

That is a harsh and unnecessary generalisation. Who are you to judge people on their lifestyle?

>Good on Telecom, txt addicted should go for a walk....

Addiction of any sort is a serious problem and cannot be fixed simply by 'going for a walk'.

234299 2004-05-06 05:12:00 Lets just say that Telecom are saving me tons each month on Mobile Communications. Its $1.39/min peak with Telecom, so if I made a call a day to home to sort out if I was gonna be home for dinner, it'd cost me an arm and a let. This doesnt include contact with the girlfriend, nor other friends / family!

Some people simply require it for their type of mobile lifestyle. Its alright if you sit at home on your ass all day because you can use a normal land-line to contact other people who are also near a land-line. This is all very well and good, but I rarely am!

Have any better idea's for me? Live and let live, there's nothing wrong with txt msgs!!!

234300 2004-05-06 05:25:00 No there's nothing wrong with text messages, but 70 a day sounds like spam to me JJJJJ (528)
234301 2004-05-06 05:31:00 I completely agree with chill .

I knew this wouldnt last, and I'm sick and tired of people complaining when a) there are still no better deals (ahem vodafone), b) they are just feeling sorry for themselves, having spent $200 on a new phone and now realising the world is amazing .

I think this was a brilliant piece of marketting by telecom . Brilliant .

234302 2004-05-06 05:35:00 BTW, ihappen to be good friends with a ring of people who send 1000s of txts per month . (about 650 in 4 days i think) .

Alas, i cant afford to join in .

234303 2004-05-06 05:49:00 In response to all those saying that more than 50 txts a day is unnecessary/spam etc etc, some people do actually have more than 1 friend! Last time i checked, it was impossible to talk to 7 (or more) people at once over the phone, for what amounts to being free. Text messaging is useful to people who like to keep in contact with their friends and talk to them at times where it may be impossible and/or inconvenient. Now I'm not in any way saying that spammers aren't out there, but it seems much easier to me just to disconnect those who abuse the service! (or is that too crazy and outlandish??)

All of those who send less than 500 texts a month, how does whatever happens to do with $10 text really affect you? When it came in, you still didn't increase the amount of txts u sent, so then why does it matter to you if they pull it?

Some say that this is a superb marketing campaign of Telecom's, however, i disagree, as this is likely to backfire horrifically for telecom if Vodafone bring out there own version of the deal and promise to keep it forever! The majority of those who switched to telecom (and some who where with them all the way) will go straight back to Vodafone, as they are so irate with telecom! From here on in, anything telecom does will no doubt be viewed with skepticism, as they have lost the trust of a large portion of their users!

I talk too much.

234304 2004-05-06 05:59:00 Hehe... Ever been to Christmas in the Park?

With 30 mates there... Trying to meet up with them all... 5x txt's per friend x 30 mates (approx) = 150 txt's! All within 5 hours.. Its not hard to do when all you want to do is find your friends amongst a crowd :-D

Its nights like that you're greatful for $10 txting, coz the cost of a call would be too much on Pre-pay, and Im not able to enter into a legally binding contract to go on a Call Plan for another 9 months (You have to be 18 in New Zealand.. Dont ask me why, I wish it werent so).

60 all day, every day is overkill though...

I doubt this will backfire horribly . It's not as if I'm not willing to see it happen, but Telecom was completely intent on continuing it except for the spammers . Telecom's network is larger, and more technologically advanced (specification wise) than Vodafones . They are much safer to do this kinda deal that Vodafone is likely to be . Neither party can keep it forever .

What is surprising is the number of people who believe that because something unfair has happened to them, an angel is automatically is going to automatically come and right the "wrongs" that have been done . Those who are angry with Telecom are infact showing, in my opinion, a lot of immaturity . I'll rephrase that: Those who persist that Telecom will be brought down for this, are the slightly unrealistic ones . I personally doubt Vodafone can pull something like this - and it is very clear that that is merely wishful thinking on your part . Telecom will NOT be brought down because teenagers hate them!

I heard today that people have stopped texting or something to waste telecom's money - I laugh at how mistaken they are . Many do not realise that there are a great deal more businesses working with telecom, and indeed alot more people with telecom that honestly don't care about txting . I think the views already expressed in this post are a clear testimony to that .

That would just be silly of them . "We don't like you, so we're going to buy a new phone, and switch companies, then end up paying more money than we do now so that we hurt your feelings . " C'mon, Why?!

Once again it is clear that the number of people on telecom who dont care about txting is being underestimated . It is extremely unlikely that this skepticism will occur among those who arent a) teenagers b) txters . Maybe it is only you?

It's good to see someone who knows to hold their tongue.

What you say about people having more than one friend is quite right, in some cases, it may be more convenient for people to text each other than to use a phone, email, or other form of communication.

However, take note that: (a) a lot of people either have jobs or studies to do; (b) when we get free landline calls to local areas, it could be less time consuming to make a quick call than to text; and (c) Vodafone is not likely to try and match what Telecom has done.

I know certain people who are addicted to their phones, people who send and receive at least a half dozen text messages in an hour. I've got no problem with that, except when they are meant to be doing school work, studying, or doing work. That said, however, they will eventually bring about their own punishment.

Compared to the call rates for mobiles, sending a text does look quite inviting. But when you come down to it, if you have access to a landline and want to get a message to someone who is in the same locality as you, it would be cheaper and quicker to just phone them up and deliver that message (depending on the circumstances, of course). Even given text abbreviations (don't get me started on how stupid those are), you cannot text as fast as you can talk.

What people don't tend to realise, is that Telecom started the $10 text deal to gain a higher market share. Vodafone previously held the largest customer base in New Zealand, and Telecom were almost missing out. However, not only was Telecom's plan successful (to a certain degree - Telecom didn't actually attract many new customers, relatively speaking), but it cost them money. Vodafone does not have the ability to beat Telecom's $10 text deal, because they would lose a lot of revenue in trying to do so.
