interesting Terry, after tech installed modem via USB as he said laptop had no NIC (me being a noob beleived him but he was wrong) all was fine until next day could not access internet. Rang paradise who advised using ethernet connection - less stress on cpu than usb so i was told - set up with c/over and have had no probs since.
But seeing as things have changed with another puta added to the mix, shall try out and post back.

yes i totally agree shame my finances didnt - spoke with knowledgable young man at PCU yesterday who told me that the software to allow me to use this setup WITH RF Cable Connection and these O/S's is sadly lacking to say the least. XP's ICS doesn't cut it . He recommended Netgear 4 port Router RP 614 which according to him is the only one available for Cable - i think thats because of the connectors adsl use are rj11???bit outta my depth on that one...

Anyway he said to try it this way and if I get it happening then great if not to get router.

thank heaven for transparent connectors can see thru them to tell

234424 2004-05-05 01:07:00 Well as u can guess SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thank u so much Terry

File sharing happening on both
Printing happening on L/Top via n/work
Internet on Laptop
BUT none from Desktop - but thats ok, have got that cable thing sussed and it works.

Error message on D/Top - "could not connect to the internet, or DNS failed."
I don't think that will take much working out.

For my private network:
IP for laptop 192.168.0.1
IP for d/top 192.168.0.2

In the TCP/IP property box on D/Top - i have IP manually configured to 192.168.0.1 - DNS is mt as I didn't know what to put in there...so is default gateway.

Will have look round to see, but if u can help Terry then great!!!

Can't get over the straight thru cable working, and how did d/top manage to connect itself yesterday!!!! How come c/over to modem has worked previous?????One thing at a time I guess.

thanks Terry

Try Primary DNS as 202.27.184.3 and Secondary DNS as 202.27.184.5

Default gateway = Laptop IP ie. 192.168.0.1

Think this is right anyway. You can always undo it if it doesn't work. ;-)

If the laptops IP is 192.168.0.1 and the desktops is 192.168.0.2 why/where have you manually configured the desktop to 192.168.0.1 (same as the laptop, bad). Each macine must have it's own IP address. If the laptop is your gateway put 192.168.0.1 in the desktops Gateway settings box and keep the desktops IP as 192.168.0.2 (or something different than the other machines within the rage 192.168.0.2 ---> 192.168.0.256). All other machines except the Gateway (laptop) should have the Gateway's IP (192.168.0.1) set as there Gateway not IP. DNS and Subnet Mask for each machine is the same and as provided by your ISP.

sorry my typo error - yes D/Top on .02

Did everything as suggested Murray and now have full ICS!!!!!Thankyou for the advice.

This has been an awesome experience for me and what a neat feeling when things finally come together. Couldn't have done it without you and Terry so thank you very much.....Gosh if everything had worked straight out of the box i'd have never learned all that I have....thats awesome!!! and all it cost was 3 days of stress, no food, no sleep (well a little bit) and the house a blimmin mess, just as well i'm on holiday!!!!

And to PressF1 forums THANKS FOR EXISTING!!!!!

yeehah!!!!
thanks Donna

234429 2004-05-05 20:58:00 hi all

just a bit of an update to yesterday .

had some trouble this morning, everyone (my putas!!) must have been tired as they wouldn't talk to each other even tho they could see each other - couldn't get on line either .

Had used laptop online last nite without the network i . e . unplugged cable from D/Top - used c/over cable to modem worked fine .

This morning had same set up and nothing .

networked the 2 together again (c/over) and bingo, all go . But if u see this Terry, would be interested in your thoughts . I am using 2 c/over cables???? one to modem and other to d/top???

Beats me??? Maybe the modem isn't so dumb after all!!!
I'd really be inteested in everyones opinions on this

cheers

234430 2004-05-05 22:10:00 TP would be better to answer this but, I guess the modem port (socket) is an auto-sensing uplink port (used for linking devices: computers, switches, routers, etc) so that is will detect what type of signal/cable you have pluged in . Normally you use the straight through/patch cable to the modem and the cross overs when you want to set up a peer to peer connection between two devices (computers in this case) . I reakon they may have sold you a patch instead of a crossover anyway, didn't swap the cables around did you? When it works, mark one cable with a bit of tape so that they are easily identified for future ref .

From your first 2 or 3 posts you indicate that file and printer sharing is enabled and all comps belong to the same workgroup . Firewall is off (yikes! I don't like that with the current nasties knocking at the door, get Kerio Free or some such on both comp's, way better than XP,s) . Simple networking (/ file sharing, or whatever it's called, I use win2k not XP) is enabled? Apparently it's a nice wizard type setup although I prefer manual setup and allocations myself which we talked about previously anyway .

You have two NIC's/LAN cards in the laptop, right? One to connect to the modem (WAN interface) and one to connect to your desktop (LAN interface) and, these have there own IP addresses (of course you do, it would not work with ICS at all without two cards)?

Have you shown Murphy the door? ICS can be a wee bit problematical at times, one of MS's kind ways of letting you know you know stuff all (he5re sort this one out then, fool ;) ) so, if it can go wrong, Murphy steps in and ensures it will from time to time . I know you've looked but, I have found this ( . wown . com/j_helmig/contact . htm" target="_blank">www . wown . com) site an excellent resource in the past .

As TP said earlier a router would help . Do you have an old comp lying around that is not in use anymore . It could be set up as a router/firewall with a little help from your friends (you'll be a PF1 veteran in no time with this advice ;\ )

Let use know how you get on or post back with queries/answers .

234431 2004-05-05 23:38:00 I'd go along with what Murrray says, it adds up. I have never used ICS, except once when I tried it between 2 win98s, there was a problem so I walked away from it.

I'm beginning to suspect that one of the cables or connectors could have an erratic bad connection, that could explain why the laptop connected ok to the internet last night, but didnt this morning. Then when re-connecting things around it worked again.

Though most other people seem to be able to use TCP/IP protocol for file sharing between computers with different versions of Windows, Ive had problems with it. It seems temperamental, with comps sometimes seeing each other, sometimes not, especially when playing around and changinging things.

So, to get reliable file sharing I used NetBEUI as the protocol for the computers to see each other, but now use IPX instead as that is included in Win2k and XP and Linux, as well as Win98. MS dropped NetBEUI from xp.

I'm not sure how IPX works in conjunction with ICS, but it can be installed easily enough. In WinXP you 'Install', highlight protocol, and 'Add' the Microsoft IPX/SPX protocol, in Win 98 you 'Add', highlight protocol, 'Add', highlight Microsoft, select IPX, the 'OK' to instal the protocol, in both cases from the Network icon in Control panel.

234432 2004-05-06 00:41:00 So let me get this straight:
Laptops IP = 192.168.0.1
Desktops IP = 192.168.0.2

Laptops Gateway = 192.168.?.?
Desktops Gateway = 192.168.0.1

DNS Settings look good with 202.27.184.3 or .5

So what is the Cable Modem's IP Address?

ICS is a ***** to change the IP of the host, it likes to set it to 192.168.0.1 (In this case it appears to have done this to the laptop) which begs to ask the question of what is the Modems IP Address?

Your setup with 2x Crossover Cables seems to be working, Ive done a similar setup as you have before.

The other option that comes to mind is using the laptop to Bridge the two LAN connections! This would allow transparent networking through the laptop, so you could set the Modem's IP as the Gateway on both the Desktop and the Laptop and that should assist....

If you could post back the Gateway of the Laptop, and the Modem's IP, Im curious to know....

Cheers
