234112 2004-05-03 23:32:00 Greetings,
I've been strongly considering upgrading to jetstream in an effort to unlock the phoneline from being constantly enganged - but on the basic plan you only get 1gb of transfer per month on the fast speed before it reverts to dialup.
My questions are:
Is there some way (apart from their calculator) that I can measure my approximate usage to know which plan suits - I play an online game a few hours per day, but it's 2D very low graphics so I don't think it uses all that much..
Secondly, when it reverts to dialup does that mean it also reverts to blocking up the phoneline again? As this is the main thing I want to stop happening, and since an extra line isn't cheap I'm just weighing up my options.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers ~

234113 2004-05-03 23:45:00 I am confused..

The Xtra basic 1 GB Surf plan does not "revert to dialup" (actually none do) when the 1 GB is exceeded. It costs 5c per megabite when this happens. Same as the 3 GB plan

The higher priced 10 GB Flat Rate plan reverts to 64 kB ADSL speed (a bit faster than dial-up) when you exceed the cap but does not use "dial-up" technology.

When you change to Jetstream, you dont need a dial-up modem, only an ADSL modem, so no-one will try to revert you to another technology over a cap.

Interested to know where you got your info from?

I doubt his info came from a poor source... maybe just unknowledgable about the in's and out's of the differing technology, jargon etc. Eg "revert to dialup" obviously means he's referring to dial-up 'speeds' they drop them down to as they've often been quoted as when the Gig limit has been reached.

Regardless, I'm sure he now has a better perspective.

234115 2004-05-04 01:58:00 The JetSurf 3GB plan would probably suit you more if you play online games occasionally . It should be ample and you can always drop down to the 1GB plan if you find it too generous .

You can check your usage with the Telecom ADSL meter to keep an eye on how much you are using .

I haven't looked at Xtra's plans but with Orcon the JetSurf 3GB plan costs the same as my previous dialup plus second phone line . I no longer need the second phone line so had it cancelled .

If you be quick you can take advantage of free connection which will save you $99 . It expires sometime soon this month .

It all depend on the type of game you play. Eg Battlefield, Counterstrike etc have New Zealand servers that are accessible via the free and full speed Jetstreamgames (JSG) logon. Most people on these games are on Jetstart and switch over to JSG when they play online. Other games require accessing non-JSG servers. A good example is Americas Army where the servers are mainly overseas. An hour on my Jetstart 128K consume approx 20 or 30 MB traffic when playing AA.

No, when you go over the limit, they throttle back your Jetstream bandwidth to 56K. So you are still connected on Jetstream (and your phone line is still able to make/accept call) but your connection speed will be slow.

I'm not such a regular gamer now but when I was playing around 2 hours a day on Jetstream 128K and also using the free/full speed jetstreamgames login, I was never over 3GB international a month.

234117 2004-05-04 05:15:00 There is no "free" traffic with the JetSurf plan like there is with JetStream. ALL traffic, national and international, is included in the monthly quota. Susan B (19)
234118 2004-05-04 05:18:00 Funny, I'm *sure* I read that they revert back to 56k on the site - yet looking at the page again I see no such mention nor do I think this would make sense, as you've said. Just a moment of stupidty on my part ;)
The game I play is www.tibia.com it uses map files that are preloaded on your computer so the only interaction would be to update what graphics are on the screen at the time as far as I know. It's nothing like the 3D graphics intensive games of today..

Just as another thought when looking at my connection speed now it shows the bytes sent/recieved - is this an accurate value? If so I could just have a look at that after playing for a few hours and work out an approximate useage on my part over a few days, yes?

Thanks again for all the help

234119 2004-05-04 05:26:00 Suggest you post a similar question on traffic usage at their game vendor site. We see that question quite often in Battlefield and Americas Army. (ie how many megabyte per hour on this game). Hopefully some of the other gamer will be able to tell you what the average usage is like.

Re the free use - check out http://www.jetstreamgames.co.nz commonly referred to as JSG. This service and website are geared for online Jetstream gamers

Any jetstream users can configure their modem to login as user@jetstreamgames.co.nz (blank password). Logging in to JSG realm allows you to

a. Play on any JSG game servers without adding to your local traffic (note JSG cannot access all games servers, only those certified by JSG - mainly XTRA and Paradise servers). Eg Battlefield, UT, CS, AA etc.

b. You can access the JSG website and forum at www.jetstreamgames.co.nz

c. JSG host a number of game clans website which are also accessible on JSG.

and finally,

d. There is a TeamSpeak server on JSG that is available for public use.

Sorry - most of this are online game-speak. Apologies to those who don't use JSG.

234120 2004-05-04 05:29:00 Oh yeah - when you are on JSG realm, you can't access other websites eg PF1. nzStan (440)
234121 2004-05-04 05:33:00 Stan, interestingly, I get higher pings on BF1942 when on JS realm log-in (120 - 150 typically) but downloads off the ftp server are full speed (- marvellous watching a 300 meg file fly in :) ) than I do on 256 (38-50) or even 128K (45-70).

I can access TeamSpeak and JS forums with no problem.
