234906 2004-05-06 23:39:00 Hi,
Can someone tell in 4 letter words how to install six critical updates- downloaded from Microsoft - but on examination of a list says they "failed to install" -- yet in my "add/remove" list it shows these to be in fact, in the computer already.
I am very concerned that one of these i e #835732-( and several others) specifically to stop this Sasser virus is no longer showing as needed in the search in Microsoft, yet is NOT installed in this computer
If I try to follow the root certificates etc I reach a dead end.

234907 2004-05-07 00:18:00 Do a search of MS's Knowledge Base for the installation reporting error, I think this is an issue with some systems/software and seem to rember seeing it at MS. IIRR, the updates are indeed installed but are misreported. Don't take my word for that though, check it out.

234908 2004-05-07 00:33:00 Hi effie, I had similar problems with some of those updates - not installing, then showing as failed installed, but not being offered again by windows update as necessary etc... very annoying. In the end did a manual download of the 2 updates i had problems with and installed them that way. Might pay to download and install manually just to be safe.

KB835732 (www.microsoft.com)

I see Murray has just posted too, hopefully he has the answer and its a common prob...

234909 2004-05-07 00:51:00 One thing I discovered was that when installing updates over the net the PC sends info to confirm that it had indeed downloaded and installed correctly. If your firewall blocks these broadcasts it won't register as being completed. S

ygate popped up on mine when updating last week and as I wasn't right there at the PC at the time I was too slow to allow it to transmit info, so it said failed when I received updates.

234910 2004-05-07 01:13:00 Also just did a quick search after what Murray posted and found this -

KB837009 (www.microsoft.com)
Will not show under add/remove programs, however you can check it is installed here:

Verifying Update Installation

To verify the files that this security update has installed, use one of the following methods:

Confirm that Q837009 appears in the Update Versions field in the About Internet Explorer dialog box.

234912 2004-05-07 01:57:00 Hi, J ZEP
I see I am not the only dummy - with due respects to Susan B and all the others :-)
O K for what it is worth - after going to Microsoft updates etc and down to updates history- the files are there if one looks for the failed/ successful installs etc- and the critical one which I want also -which is KB835732
One of you suggested I do a search --- but where ???? microsoft does not have such a device, and the trouble shooting list put out by Microsoft, evades this file completely.
No matter where I search I cannot seem to find it to "manually download it"
None is showing in my add/remove list (ie the ones I want- the others are there)
Talk to me bones :-)

There are links to the download you are wanting here (www.microsoft.com).

234914 2004-05-07 04:05:00 The is the search page for the MS Knowledge Base ( . microsoft . com/search/search . aspx?c=0&qu=&s=1&st=b&View=en-us" target="_blank">search . microsoft . com) . Use KB article numbers, or Microsoft Security Bulletin numbers such as MS04-011, or use the file/download/update number . The KB numbers are not always the same as the files (Q********) for some reason only known to MS .

This is the MS Download Centre ( . microsoft . com/downloads/search . aspx?displaylang=en" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) choose your poison on the left hand bar, the topical one in this dicussion being Windows (Security Updates) ( . microsoft . com/downloads/search . aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=7" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) . You want the actual download so, don't go to the Windows Update but search or browse for the individual files, read the whole article for any vital info like patches that should be installed before the one you are viewing, OS (doh!), version, possible conflicts and bugs or updated updates (more common than you think) .

System nanagement and Development Resources are also handy download section to look at as they often give more info and a wider range of choice than the Joe public sections .
